Now obviously line of sight isn’t 100% true as I’ve communicated with guys on the other side of a Ridgeline but again…we have repeaters everywhere out there because fireground communication is of vast importance, especially when we’re talking thousand+ acre fires

Lots of options for handhelds, you don't need a license because they are not high enough power. Line of sight is a good rule of thumb with those. If you are up in the mountains youll get way less range but on an open flat road you could get up to like 15 miles of range.

This is just an example of what you would put in your truck. 15watts pretty good range this is what people are hitting repeaters off of.

Then just another example of a handheld. usually 1-5 watts.
    https://midlandusa.com/collections/offroad/products/x-talker-t51vp4-walkie-talkie

Then theres something like this a battery powered but high powered radio which is the inbetween if you can justify the price would probably be closest to what youre looking for

Im learning Baofeng is for line of sight unless your using repeaters. Thats a whole can or worms with frequancy and programming.
I installed a midland mx275 in the taco and paired it with X talkers T295vp4 to walk around and loan out to other vehicle in the group. They seem to have the best range and can use channels 8-14 on the hand helds without a license.

yeah CB is trash, cost more time/money and works just about as good as handhelds from walmart

I'm gonna copy you. I've been putting off upgrading my stuff for so long.. just cant keep up with all the new shit and methods these days. I've been running the Rugged rh-5r UHF/VHF radios for a couple years now.. and I do like them and they've worked nicely. But I want something a little more legit AND I've been wanting a new truck radio and always wanted them to be able to all work with each other. That setup you put together is perfect imo. I'll just keep my 2 Rugged's for backup and or listening at KOH.

As I dive further into a new hole I'm learning the difference. I had an old CB, now they seem outdated by all the new handhelds coming out. Midland was my fist choice, Just haven't had a chance to use it properly or link up with another user to field test.

They use GMRS in Baja if that gives you any idea of how well they work :mudding:

I've found the RepeaterBook app pretty handy, especially when out of state...the filter for the different bands isn't very intuitive (arrow).

As a note, I am going to be picking up a Rugged M1 Race radio. Ya, its technically a Ham. But will be needed in Baja and makes it a ton easier to listen in to races in the states.

I like the rugged radios 45w kit for the taco but idk what the quality looks like. I know a lot of the race guys are using them, and I like that their kit comes with literally everything you need to install it cleanly.

I really like the mic on the Midland, all in one display with it. Makes it a nice touch.

The UHF/VHF Rugged's have race channels so you can listen. Was just telling @Yacob_D that. I'm going to keep my two Rugged RH-5R's for listening in at KOH, etc.

I’d also like to do a remote face unit, does midland have one?
