Question for you @snowsk8air2, if I put a 14” travel shock in the back, do you think I could get away with a shock hoop keeping it SOA? And would I need to go through the bed with a SUA? Extended length of the shock I’m looking at is 34.95 and compressed is 20.85.

Sua all day. The gain in uptravel trumps all when talking about suspension performance. And yeah you could keep it under the bed. The archive kit is meant for 12 or 14” shocks soa or sua. Gonna be converting @Sixthelement 12” soa to sua here soon and hoping to get 14-15” of travel out of it.

I was just gonna build my own hoops instead of the archive. What shocks is he running? I will be using the archive hammers and sua kit.

@XPOTRPR @Yacob_D thanks for the suggestions out in Superior, I'm going to have to get some armor and sliders asap! This Ohio dude is not used to much more than mud puddles.

The Archive towers make it really easy TBH, if not JD has some towers that sit a lil different and and barely poke the bed for the reinforcement bar and they can work with their frame braces easily.

    Fun stuff.
For armor. I know of alot of the guys have used and liked RCI skids and sliders. Local company is Pakrax for sliders also. I know they fit real tight though. So can use them as much a step.
Not sure if Wescott Designs or State48 have local stock etc.
If not there are people are around that can build sliders too

For those on a dirt bike (or anyone, really) what are your thoughts on off grid gps? I’m undecided on two options.

edit: I'm leaning towards option 1 and paying for an app like onx offroad. It'll do everything I want with tracking and getting me back to my truck, but will also be more in-depth and give me tracks to follow and all that stuff.

Option 1. Mount my phone to handlebars and use it for gps and have a Garmin messenger in my backpack that I can use for sending off grid texts to my wife.

    https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/793265

Option 2. Get a nicer Garmin that does both gps and satellite communication and have that on my handlebars.

    https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/699779

I just want to be able to track my routes so can re-ride stuff in the future that I find fun but also so I can find my way back to my truck. Either one should do the trick, I just worry about the ruggedness and battery life of having my phone on my handlebars.

My buddy and I really like using Gaia in Baja. You can layer the maps, set up waypoints, download tracks, do all your updates at once and load as much as you want into it. Onx only allows I think 10 tracks, and I don’t remember if it allows you to record your own tracks or not, and I think there was something strange with their layering. Gaia gives you satellite, topo, and gps view. We have been very satisfied with Gaia over onx. And if I remembered correctly it’s a cheaper sub than OnX

This is something to consider, I know on motorcycles the vibrations can damage the phone, not sure about on a dirt bike. I’d imagine up to a 450 wouldn’t have terrible vibrations as compared to an 883 lmao.

If I do use the phone, I have a quad lock case and they have an option to add a vibration dampener to it. It’s a super solid system.

Perfect. If it was me I’d go with Gaia good sir. I love the fact that you can download waypoints and record your own tracks. It’s a great app imho.

@EatSleepTacos Also, idk bout OnX but Gaia you can download on your computer as well and load all your tracks that way. Check out azoffroad.net Scott has just about every trail for rigs, quads/dirt bikes explored and mapped out with waypoints that you can download for free.

Another vote for Gaia, I plan out routes on my laptop, wirelessly synch to an old iphone (no cell service, but still picks up wifi and gps), ride my ride, then wirelessly synch back to the laptop when I get back.

I also use Avenza with the USNF motor vehicle use map to make sure I color within the lines. all free.

I really havent been impressed with garmin for moving at anything more than walking speeds.

I’ve heard the same thing with garmin. Works great for navigation in town and on interstates tho

Fantastic, Glad you made it out to play on a beautiful day! I've installed the RCI armor for two different trucks and can say they make a good product. Ill roll with ya next time you wanna go, I make time for trail days! Welcome to the desert and all the sharp pointy things :tumbleweed:

Im on OnX, have been for many years and have so many pins, tracks, with added pictures. The backcountry app or offroad versions are more trail friendly and have more labeling. They just added carplay which is nice for the truck using the HU. I like the idea of using an old phone without internet as the bar mounted gps. OnX allows you to download and use offline maps and still have the turn by turn with ability to zoom depending on the map you download. My two cents :pccoffee:

I have Gaia and OnX. Gaia is cheaper overall for more, one time 29 for all layers etc. Onx is 25 for the offroad and they want an extra 75? for public land layers? Nah
Plus the layers to me are clunky on OnX. Granted Gaia does have a steeper learning curve id say. But more powerful and useful.
I have a Garmin Sat messenger. I know others have good use of the Zello for sat messaging also.
