The very simple answer is that it was put on incorrectly the last time it was installed. It is 18 ft*lb. Do that, and you won't have issues. I promise. Heat cycles or not (this is not the cause fyi).

Also, I rectified a composite oil filter housing on another Toyota. The housing had been installed by someone who just blasted it on.

The housing removal/install tool failed at the connection to the 1/2", 3 ft long breaker bar, with zero damage to the housing itself. It took a 3 lb. mallet and a chisel, after cutting a slit in it with a Dremel, to get it to budge, so I wouldn't worry about the housing failing either.

I disagree, but it's a moot point. No part of this discussion is going to cause me to swap back over to a plastic housing.

Not trying to get you to do that. Couldn't care less.

All I'm saying is that if you put it on according to the manufacturers instructions, with a torque wrench, you will have zero problems removing the OEM composite housing.

Truth. The first time you feel 18 ft*lb, you’ll think, “that’s it?”

hahahaha so much explained! Nah I use hand tools for everything. I do have the milwaukee torque wrench tho that is fucking sweet and find every excuse to use it. But really anything less then 25-30 ft pnds is usless. I can pretty much feel that out.

Looking back over the years, I’d say I probably gained my “feel” on a wrench through more than a few errors versus a torque wrench.

Bicycle maintenance will give you a light touch.

My neighbor is was a Harley master tech till retirement. Always preaches torques spec. I love getting under his skin with ugga duggas. But with a small wrench the light foot pounds is pretty easy to judge. When it came to rebuiding the motor every bolt in my 4runner was checked and rechecked for correct torque.

I concur. I was helping my son build his new electric bike. Told him "Tighten up that little bolt there." Next thing I here is the f bomb. I forgot to tell him all bolts are not created equal.
