Anyone recommend a good starter Mountain bike?

 

Front or full suspension, also casual biking, off road trekking, or downhill and jumps?

 

View from our camp site in MOAB one AM. There's an RTT there if you look close!

Next is a Mesa view from 191 and the rest are pics of us going up it. Didn't make it all the way up as my wife was shitting herself!!!! It was a trip to relieve stress, not add more, so I turned around.

I've spent my "productive work day" looking into a good starter mountain bike.

I was told that Craigslist would have good deals on lightly used bikes:

So much better! Thank you! Now just need new tires a balance rotation and alignment then I will come over and start cutting my fenders

 

not looking to do any rock jumping or downhill shenanigans.

Just a reliable mountain bike I can take down those bike trails at state parks.

 

Also, the latest craze is Fat Tire bikes which, admittedly, I have looked into. They are making front suspension forks for them now and they pretty much rule the loose terrain segment like sand and snow riding. There are a ton of places on the web to buy a quality, unassembled bike if you have a local shop willing to set it up if you can't.

How are those phat tires on NON loose terrain?

 

I am 6'1"

I would say id be down to spending $300 to $500 bucks for a decent bike.

 

The fat tires bikes ride like a cadillac, even without suspension forks.

This would be a nice economy bike that wouldn't leave you disappointed. You'd need a 20" frame at 6'1"...

Bang for the buck stick with a hard tail. 26ers are cheap now on Craigslist as that tire size has been abandoned by the serious new bike market. Still lots of hardware out there to keep them going for a while though. Avoid Fat bikes. Unless they are a second bike or you plan to ride on beaches and in the snow they are worthless. at 6' 1" your a large maybe an XL on most bikes.

what size tires would i need? i didnt know frame mattered

 

The frame size is the measurement of the vertical tube for the seat. If that measurement is too short, your legs will be folded too much on the pedal upstroke which robs you of pedaling torque.

The latest size is 29" tires. The bigger the tire, the easier it is to climb over obstacles. Just like in our trucks or a Jeep.
