Applied for quite a few fish biologist positions in Flagstaff, AZ. While I am not overly confident I will be given an offer on these positions, it's abundantly clear the flagstaff area produces a lot of wildlife jobs.

How is rental housing around these areas? Most positions will be term (9-13 months) so I would rent for roughly a year. Dog friendly? I would have ~3k a month income after taxes and I would like to keep rental costs lower.

Trying to see if I can even afford the area with the pay offered. I'd hate to take a job if I can't realistically afford the area.

 

Hey Gage! I live in Flagstaff! Renting is a little tough within the city as there are a lot of students there. The surrounding areas are easier to rent from though. We have had to have roomates up here to live in town but most places are dog friendly and because of the student situation most of the renters do short rental agreements! If you look into munds park, Doney park, etc you may find cheaper rentals than in town in Flagstaff.

 

Dang, I was hoping to not have to room with someone since I don't know the area and finding a good roomy is difficult. I'll look into those areas. I prefer to be in biking distance to work (<10 miles) but I'd drive if I had to. Be cool to see you again! At least I would start with some friends for in the area.

 

Where are the office locations you know of? Most anything that has to do with fish and game is on the outskirts anyway. And all those places really butt up to Flag so you would still be in biking distance. I had a buddy who live in Kachina village and biked into town everyday for work.

 

I am not sure where the position would be based out of. It just said flagstaff on the announcement. It will most likely be on the outside of the town.

I just know the forest service is trying to fill a crap ton of positions before trump takes office in fear of a hiring freeze, my wife is in the middle of sorting out over 500 resumes for various jobs to set up interviews. It's like this on multiple locations right now as they are all helping take on specific types of jobs to help each other's territory out.

 

Trump wont change anything in the parks system. Another scare tactic. Besides Obama dumped so much goddamn money into the parks its ridiculous, about the only thing he did right. They have enough money to keep hiring with or without Trump.

 

I also applied for the forest service position. And ya, Feds have a hiring push for early January to beat trumps possible freeze. Screws me a bit because most positions are anticipated to start in April and I graduate in May .

 

It's not specifically like the parks themselves, it's a lot of behind the scenes positions as well. And I'm not sure where the money went because, over the last few years they have a lot of cut backs, positions not filled due to budget, cost of living increases have been barely anything vs previous years. And so on.

 

You can also look at coming in as a intern, then when you graduate you can be permanent. They normally just start at a grade or step lower then what the real full time position starts you at, but it's actually sometimes easier to get your foot in the door this way.

 

I am exhausting all options. I was told I wouldn't make it in the wildlife/fisheries field without a masters and I am out to prove some people wrong . Then go back for my masters.

I have 10pt vet preference, previous internships, and a strong computational background (python, pearl, R, GIS, etc). I am applying for any job I qualify for. I am only being selective for jobs in the western states (not cali) since my gf here landed a 2 year term with the Feds and has been struggling to get status for 2 years. After she gets federal status I think we will be headed to Alaska.

All that is due to the higher ups within the forest and parks services. Once the money is allocated to them, it is theirs. How they use it is also up to them.
