I have a few AZ trail comm questions.

I’m very new to GMRS trail comms and my research leads me to Midland (USA! USA!) but I’m trying to make a choice between MTX 400 and MTX.

Does the MTX 275 have good enough range for light AZ trail wheeling?

I just want it for learning comms, weather, emergencies and maybe vehicle-to-vehicle with my Jeep buddy.

Which would you guys recommend/which do you use?

 

Been getting to do some more Surface Programming.. getting easier with every feature. Excited for some more organic parts in the future to get to really dive into 3D/Live 5 surfacing!

This little guy is about the size of a quarter. With surfaced Rads and Tapers and a blind surfaced "cup". Only one feature is parallel on it.. ended up having to get creative on the 2nd/3rd Op work holding.

 

I have the MXT 115 which is about the same thing as the 275 just with the controls on the box instead of handheld piece and I've been very impressed. I also want to mention I use the whip antenna they sell. I couldnt image something with more than double the power but for only $30 more might as well go for it

 

I watched a radio guy’s review of the two and he said you only see performance improvements if you double the watts so the 40 watt radio sounds like a better deal, other than not having the controls on the mic. The 400 is available on Tacoma Lifestyle so I might just pull the trigger soon if the MTX 400 is a way better purchase.

 

Can't speak directly about the 400, but a group of us (@Sapnjack @xtremewlr @chrslefty @Sixthelement) recently dove into GMRS. We did a multi-truck trip just recently and the comms were excellent. I personally went with the 275, the controls on the mic were just too convenient to pass up. Snag the 6db antenna and you can have clear communication for seriously long distances (30 miles or so in our experiences).

 

Just make sure you get your FCC GMRS license...$70 for 10 years...EZPZ

The 275 is a solid piece of gear...

 

@snowsk8air2, liked you hood vents so I kinda copied you and put some on my 4Runner.



I'd been wanting to do them for a while anyhow. Should help in the heat down here. I hope.

 

It’s not a cure for the heat but it certainly is a cheap way to help so long as you don’t mind cutting holes in the hood. Looks good man!

For me when I did mine last summer I noticed a consistent 10-15 degree lower intake air temps after doing it.

 

This weeks pointless purchase. Gonna see if I have any scorpions in the yard later

Happy to report that windshield replacement and calibration went smoothly this AM. Super quick, on time, and good work. Local guy too.

now to just make this one last longer than 2 months.

I went with the MXT400, and it's probably overkill haha. Everyone else was rocking the MXT 115 or 275 and they had great functional off-roading range. I ended up having to mount it behind the middle console because I had a CB radio already up in front. I would have appreciated the 275 on mic controls. If I did it again I would have gone 275. I'm also not able to do channels 8-14 as they are 0.5 watt channels and I don't think the MXT400 can go down that far in power.

 

Just want to say thanks again to @Man of Steel TRD for doing the amp install as well as wiring up a voltmeter and a hidden charge cable. Super happy with the outcome and how cleanly everything was done. Was nice that he let me hangout and watch. Hope everything goes well with the business once that’s fully up and running. Next up is some sound deadening and I’ll be done with audio for the lifetime of this truck.

And that reminds me...need to ping him about a friend of mine that needs a backup camera and new deck installed in her Tahoe

 

He cleaned up my install and redid the wiring on a sub I had installed from frys electronics that they messed up. Very awesome dude.
