So now that we’re back to semi-normalcy, does anyone have experience with home brewing? I’ve pondered the idea for quite awhile now. Always thought the idea of drinking some crispy boys you made yourself was pretty cool.

My BIL used to brew his own, but discovered he has Chron's Disease and a gluten allergy...which is too bad because his brews were glorious. One of my colleagues brews some as well, but only seasonally...which means his Christmas Stout is right around the corner!

Did you wire him the money? Lol. If you did actually get him to respond and bought it that is amazing.

Brewing depends on how much you want to get involved into it and your comfort level with creativity. There are 2 types of brewing. Extract/partial grain and all grain and each has their pro and cons. I found new brewers tend to do well with getting a kit from one of the 2 local brew stores or ordering one offline. The benefit is that they provide all ingredients and provide the correct cooking time for a particular recipe.

I would recommend brewing what you like to drink. If you don't like to drink it much then you won't enjoy the brewing process as much. However, IPA and Pale ales are usually the easiest to do because you can usually get drinkable beer even if you make a mistake. Stouts and specially beers are more complex to make.

One of the biggest factor to making good beer is having a setup that will allow you to control you ferment temperature and always making sure your equipment is clean and sanitized.

    Extract Brewing
Can be done on the stove with a large pot. The ingredients are a little more because of the cost of the powder grains but not that much more. Many brewers start here because it takes less equipment and can be done inside.

    All Grain
Gives more flexibility and creativity with our recipes. There is more equipment needed but you can brew larger batches.

If you are interested in getting involved in brewing, I can show you my setup and/or have you out for a brewing session. Also there are very helpful people at the Arizona Society of Homebrewers (ASH) you can join the

Whew.. what a morning so far. First thing when I got to the shop, started filling up a 5g bucket of coolant. Walked over and started up the Mill, co-worker started telling me a story, forgot about the coolant.. realized.. and ran over to find a 100sqft flood, over pouring from the bucket. Ironic part was... My coworker was telling me about his rookie mistake on a part he did yesterday. TGIF
