I have Cox, and my torrent speed seem pretty quick. I also use protocol encryption with is supposed to help with that. :notsure:

If Cox does throttle high end ports, I've never noticed it.

A simple ICMP pingplotter to the ASUS during torrent connections shows that the router couldn't handle the number of connections and load through it. I switched over to my ASA5505 and showed over 2000 concurrent connections. I don't think ASUS has that kind of stats and horsepower anyway.

My speeds on Cox have been decent as well. I don't use default ports but I just switched over to them and didn't notice much of a difference in speeds when downloading the same file 2 times.

Been messing with "Ok Google" and found some neat stuff it can do while I was on back to back meetings all day yesterday.

    1. Ask it to play any music. I have it to check my phone first, if its not there it checks my Google Play Music account which more than likely has the song I'm looking for. "Ok Google, Play Stone Temple Pilots Crackerman" and boom it plays. Then you can "Ok Google, next, pause, stop".

    2. Ask it things about where you are at. It now has location awareness. I was walking in the park and asked "What is the name of this Park" and it told me. The demo I saw showed a guy standing by a church in a park and said "what is the name of that Church" and it figured it out. Kinda neat.

    3. Carry a conversation with it, sort of. I asked it "How built the Hover Dam" and got the answer. Then I just asked "When" and it told me when construction started. I asked "when did it finish" and it told me the end date of construction. Google now knows you are asking follow-up questions about the first question you asked. Kinda neat but still needs more work.

    4. Fun things to say to google. "Make me a sandwich", "Do a barrel roll", "Tilt", "Who's on 1st", "When am I".

A few years ago I got the crazy notion to build my own e-mail server. I found out the hard way that Cox blocks port 25. While I could have worked around it, I ultimately decided to re-use the hardware and build something else. It's my understanding that many ISP's block ports to make it more difficult for businesses to operate on their consumer networks, though many tend to spin it by saying they do it to reduce virus exposure and security risks.

This is true with cox for some areas. However if you get a business account with them then they will open those ports up.

Quite true... Unfortunately, in my case, I don't want to pay for a business account when I'm not running a business out of my home. I periodically build systems to help keep my skills current.

I wish I could get a static IP from them without a business account.

Does your change often? I've had the same IP for 3 years.

Get Dyndns. Hell I got like 18 more domains, you are more than welcome to one.

It only changes when my router restarts due to power outages, which is maybe twice a year. I SSH to my PC often (not using port 22), so it sucks when I need to update the IP address for the apps that connect to my PC.

Even when I power cycle my modem or the power goes out I still get the same IP. The only times it's changed for me is when I bought a new modem, or when I called and asked for it to be changed because of non-stop brute force entries and what not.

This is why I don't use port 22. I think a lot of bots try to attack that port.

I don't use any standard ports for most anything. I just got lucky and had an IP that for some reason was getting nailed on all ports no matter what I did. Cox changed the IP issue went away.

Bots hit my sshd on port 22 with their shitty password lists 24 hours a day. With password login turned off and reasonable rules set on the firewall and fail2ban I give zero fucks. A real DDoS hitting your gateway is going to cause a shitty day regardless of what port you're using.

Also, this might be a decent place to put this, but I've got a 1U poweredge 1750 up for grabs if anyone is willing to pick it up within the next couple days. I'm near 48th st and elliot. I haven't tried booting it for a couple years, but it used to work just fine. Comes with 2x 30GB 15krpm Cheetahs, 2x 3GHz Xeons, and 2x 512MB DDR ECC memory.

It's useless for modern server stuff like ESXi, because the Xeons aren't x64, but it's also free. Figured someone might need some old ass part/power supply that's hard to find.
