Wish I had the experience they require. I'd take that job since I wouldn't be losing any money.

Everything I know is just from doing this stuff as a hobby. Also, at this point, I'm more familiar with Linux/BSD than anything M$ (though I'm sure I could catch up quickly). I know some places want you to have a degree of some type, even if they're going to re-teach you to do things their way. I don't think they would want to pay me $25/hr for the "experience" I have.

    Worth a shot.

Would you qualify as a Linux admin?

I'm not sure what would be considered good. I really need to get more familiar with iptables if was to manage anyone's network.

Not sure. I can manage a Debian system pretty well. I think Red Hat is what's mostly used though. I'd have to familiarize myself with it's package manager (yum?) and where they place their configs.

I think you got enough experience. You should meet our Linux admin... Pretty sure he can't spell Linux.

He is basically the desktop admin of our Linux servers if that makes any sense. His job is to read log files and log into each server daily to ensure nothing is failing and everything is moving. He fixes minor issues if it comes down to the server but once it gets into networking another team takes over. At most he has to make changes here and there on servers. Some users have Linux stations so if they need one setup and configured its his job. His job title doesn't really fit if you ask me.

It is. Most of the time he's just browsing the internet.

Pretty much. I used to have a job like this managing windows servers. boring, but it was a good job to have if you like to read books. I just read every tech book I could get my hands on.

When shit does break, he hates his life.

Total system loss. Not sure of details but AC was off or set high and a handful of servers died over the weekend. He was called in on the weekend to fix all of them. I don't know much about it I just remember him being super grumpy that week.

Hope he had backups. Should be easy to restore a backup, especially if the hardware is identical.

you need to have significant flavors of linux experience let alone dev behind your belt as well. depends on the market and depend for a specific requirement.

Flavors as in distros? I would think Debian or Red Hat and derivatives of both are mostly what's used.

Yes distros and such. Knowing the CLI and other shells like bash is extremely worthy in what i have encountered with Linux admins. Which also cover down on Unix duties as well from what i have seen.
