I'd try using just one router. If you have two rotuers going and you didn't set them up to be on different subnets and talk to each other correctly that could be causing you tons of headaches.

Did this work before or is this a new setup?

It is a new setup. Purchased the linksys router couple of months ago in order to get better streaming through Amazon fire stick. It worked ok to start but now it is almost worse than the previous setup.
Thinking of getting a new cable modem for just the Mac and using the linksys for the WiFi. I honestly am not that tech savy so I think this might be the easiest path for me. I am open to better suggestions.

    Try this first.

In your modem/router combo disable the router and make it just a modem. Then plug your new linksys into that and use that as a router. See if that helps out before you start buying new hardware. A lot of times with the combo's if you disable their modem (which normally is crap) the modem works fine as a stand alone device.

You may need to factory reset to get that combo device to disable the modem, just depends on the make/model. Just be prepared to have to start from scratch with both devices if something goes wrong or you can't get into them to config.

I'm also in Chandler so I could swing by and take a look sometime. Might not be until next week though or maybe Sunday.

Sounds like something else is going on. Can you log into your router and look at the client list? All devices you own? Did you use your old network and password? Maybe one of your neighbors is pigging back off you, especially since Cox set data limits.

Ooooh I didn't think about someone else sucking the network dry.

Maybe, maybe not. Like you, don't want him running off spending money he doesn't need too.

I agree about the modem/router combos being garbage. I have a very expensive one that I am only using as a modem... it does that great.

I need to find a used ASUS router I can setup on their AiMesh system to test out and improve signal strength at the other end of the house. Especially for the smart switches and plugs.

Will try and check once I get home. Finally downloaded the netgear app this weekend but cannot login to save my life. The network map looked odd to me but again, I am not really good at this stuff.
The linksys does have a 2.4 and 1.5 guest networks that are not secure and I cannot figure out how to disable. Someone could be piggybacking off me.

I've been wondering about their AiMesh as well. I just decided to pull cable everywhere. Gigabit backbone with 3 AP's have been doing me well for the most part. It still just boils down to one device doing all the routing and I think that is my issue. I've been looking at some commercial based equipment for my house. I have too many devices on my network for most home routers.

Thanks for advice! Not too worried about it right now as I don't watch much TV during the week. I might have more questions this weekend as I try to get it working better.
All I need is a secure network for 2-3 devices, cannot be that hard!

2-3 is simple. I have, as of right now, 40 connected devices.

Reset my modem/router combo last night and made some changes. I could not disable the wireless portion of it but changed channels so I am the only one on that channel instead of 6. Switched my TV to that wireless and it worked much faster last night. Hopefully this will solve the slowness issue for now.
Don't think I need the linksys router right now for my needs. Think I will just unplug and keep for a later date if I add some stuff.
    Thanks for all the help.

I reminder a time where it would've been nice to just call out commands like in Star Trek TNG. I suppose with Amazon Echo and Google Home that's now possible. And now I have no interest lol

Another question for you tech people. It seems when my VPN is running I am not able to send emails. Just trying to understand why. I might have something setup wrong as I redid all my email accounts lately thanks to talking to Cox. It's not a big deal but a pain in the ass.
I need to take some tech classes as reading about networks was actually interesting. Think I have mine figures out now but want to learn more.

I just use gmail or hotmail. I don't even know what my Cox email is.

If I ever change my ISP, I know my email will still be the same. I don't think Google fiber has made it's way here yet. I have the 300/30 from cox, which works well enough for my needs.

Moved houses recently, so I logged on to cox.com and pressed "Move my Service" which was surprisingly easy and worked. Couple weeks later I'm trying to pay my bill online and it says I owe nothing because it's connected to my old address and not the new one. I can't login with the new account number. So I call and talk to tech for 45 minutes and they couldn't figure it out. I can pay over the phone for a fee?

    God damnit Cox.
