My dad and I went scouting in 36c today in preparation for my hunt next week. It was a good day with lots of beautiful scenery. We found some gourds or coyote fruits hanging from a Cholla by the road side.IMG_20171021_154751914.jpg

Also found this usgs benchmark. Neither of us have ever seen one before.IMG_20171021_112443968.jpg
And maybe the strangest damn thing I have ever come across in the middle of the desert was when I jumped out of the truck and found oyster shells spread all across this field. The white rock looking things are all oyster shells.IMG_20171021_113846365.jpg IMG_20171021_113900503.jpg
I guess someone was having an oyster fueled orgy out there? Haha

    Also found a metateIMG_20171021_104424427.jpg
And some great views of kitt peak and the altar valleyIMG_20171021_151038302.jpg IMG_20171021_104345409.jpg IMG_20171021_104338866.jpg

The day culminated in our approach to an area we thought looked promising. We jumped two whitetail doe's as we were approaching the first foothill and I decided that was enough evidence for me. I didn't want to go hiking through the whole area and get the deer all stirred up before the hunt. Hopefully things will pan out next weekend.

I hear ya... Some buddies of mine went up this past weekend without me and those fuggers shot limits and knocked down about 8 honkers too!

Good luck out there. There’s definitely some nice deer in that area. Check out the area around Kings Anvil Ranch too, not sure where you’re camping but it’s off of the 286 On the west side, there’s always some nice deer around there.

As far as the situation down there, like @azgunrunner said, not as bad as before but still active. Come across numerous encounters and none have turned out badly, not to say it can’t happen though. Just keep your weapons loaded and ready. Mostly, if you mind your own business, they do too. I’m just down Ajo if ya got any questions! Tag a nice one bud!

Kings anvil ranch is where we entered. The area we picked is kinda where the South side of saucito mtn hits the rest of the range. It's about a mile hike to get to the hills from the camping spot but that's ok, the area looks promising enough for me to not mind the walk. I appreciate the advice. We will be on high alert for 2 legged critters throughout the hunt, but we were encouraged by not seeing any obvious signs of illegals in the areas we scouted.

Your right next door to my hunt, 36A. It's a great area.

Got some gambles quail this weekend. Forgot to take some before pics, so here is the after pic. And of course a picture of the rig that made it possible.

    Thanks guys!
It's a pre '64 Winchester model 70 featherweight chambered in .243. Cartridge was a 95 gr. Federal Fusion. Scope is a Leupold 3-9. It was my dad's rifle. He also had one chambered in .30-06 so he hunted with that and I hunted with this one growing up. The scope and rifle are both significantly older than me. Lol

Heads up guys, I've been finding articles online about a group that is trying to get cat hunting banned in AZ. This would make mountain lions and bobcats protected species. They're aiming to get it on the Nov. 2018 ballot and if they do it will probably pass so if you're interested in ever hunting one or both species you've probably got only one year to bag one.
