My buddy wanted to try hard-mode so I took him down 1.5 hours of 4-lo down a forest road and parked the truck, packed camp on our backs, and headed up 1800 vertical feet to deer camp in the Santa Rita's for opening day of the archery OTC deer season.

The mountains were so wet and every canyon and creek was flowing. The Mexican Mimosas were in bloom everywhere (and the deer appear to love snacking on them). It made it very hard to pattern the bucks as they were no longer tied to a spring or usual water source.

All the wood was soaked, but we managed to get a decent fire going and dried up more wood (pyro putty ftw)

Tried out a Ursack bear-resistant bag vs a traditional stuff-sack hanging from a tree as you are supposed to be able to leave the bag on the ground, tied to a tree. Raccoons got in it even with the recommended odor-proof inner bags. I know it was a raccoon because they tried to steal my buddie's rangefinder as well as my folding saw. Funny thing, I just went to their site to verify the name of the product and the first review on there mentions that theirs failed to keep raccoons out.

It was my buddies first time hunting and all we saw were doe's but we both had a good time and he is definitely hooked.

Went out quail hunting today looking for a “meal for 1”. I’m not much of a bird hunter but I go out anyway. Typically come back empty handed. Not today, killed my first quail in AZ.

Damn I went out last weekend to a spot I normally have a shot at limiting out, but didn't see anything but doves and rabbits. Gonna hopefully get out this friday and try and meal for 2.

It was actually for dinner but still delicious. Butter basted, S&P, and poultry seasoning done on the grill.

Went quail hunting for the first time opening weekend, got three and have only gotten 1 in the last month that I've gone! Anyone got some great spots around Tucson they're willing to give up? :D

These were the first two I got that day.

A few weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to be a part of my buddy's sheep hunt. We had the guys from CIF Outdoors join us to document the hunt... Super cool video!

I see the one mule deer standing up in the grass. Looks like something else bedded down in the grass above it?
