I just got a call from my father-in-law... My 9-month-old Niece, Peyton, is headed to Children's Hospital for surgery. Apparently there was some swelling in one of her hands. They took her to the doctor today, and he told them to go to a specialist, and the specialist said she had septic arthritis.

It doesn't sound serious to me, but I'm not a doctor. Apparently it's worth immediate surgery, though. I think it's dangerous any time you have to put a baby under.

I'm waiting for my wife to get home from work and we're headed to the hospital together.

I'll udpate when I can, but it probably won't be until tonight.

    Thanks in advance!

    Well she's through surgery OK.

I didn't know what to expect when we arrived at the hospital, but she was sitting up, smiling and playing like she normally does. Her right hand looked red and swolen, though.

The surgery was simple enough. The made a cut along her index finger on her right hand, cleaned out the infection (which is all septic arthritis is) and stitched it back up.

She'll get a central line put in tomorrow (an IV into her chest), which will be another surgery, and she'll be in the hospital until Saturday. From that point she'll need 3 weeks of 3-times-a-day IV antibiotic treatments, then a final surgery to remove the central line.

It looks like she'll be fine. WHEW!

    Thank you all.

My wife and I went to see her again last night. She had the second surgery to put in the central line yesterday. She was sleepy when we arrived, but was awake and playing by the time we left (which sucks for her parents, b/c we left at 10pm and there were no signs of her letting them get any sleep for a while).

Here's a picture of her w/ the right hand wrapped up (which I call the lobster claw) and the bandaid where the IV was. You can't see the central line b/c it's under her shirt, but she doesn't seem to notice it's there.

(She'd also had an orange popsicle)
