Anyone know why the back end clanks and rattles when going over railroad tracks or speed bumps? It's a brand new truck but seems like something back there needs some grease.

I'm a paper pusher by day. Sure would like to be able to crawl under there and shoot something with some grease.

The spare tire has a chain that secures it and either the tire may be a hair loose or the chain may be rattling around.

The manual transmission is a clunky girl, especially if you're in neutral or clutching going over rough things like speed bumps or potholes. It's entirely normal.

This truck seems to clunk and clank. Time will tell if it is ok...

I think most trucks do...at least most I've driven. Nature of the beast.

My truck sounded like a skeleton jacking off on a tin roof. I wrapped the spare tire chain in black tape after I tightened it up.

    It's this.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that it's normal because I don't think it SHOULD be happening. Let's just say it's the kind of 'normal' that the Toyota dealerships are talking about when they use that word. It's only 'normal' in the sense that Tacomas with manual transmissions clunk. Mine does it too.

There's slop in the driveline somewhere that clunks when there is no load on the system.

Same thing with my MT if you have it in gear so it has just a little load on it the clunking stops mostly. Had a MT dodge did the same thing for 120k miles.

Also check for how tightly the spare tire is held. Mine loosened up a little and sounded like shit was going to fall off over every bump. I tightened it up a little bit and the racket went away. Plus the previously mentioned spare tire chain.

Did you check your leaf spring U bolts? Hopefully not the problem, but an easy check, and from all posts about a possibility. If that's the case get em torqued up before anymore driving.

I had the same problem. I noticed that, after going through some deep puddles, I would hear that rattling. Finally looked under the truck and saw that the spare tire chain had fallen through a hole in the spare rim so it was clanging around when I was at an angle. I lowered the spare and re-raised it, trying to make the chain stay somewhere where it wouldn't fall through again. So far it seems to be working. Haven't heard the noise anymore.

Also check the rear fender liners as they are known to rattle, I put some rubber tubing on the lower edge of my 15 and it has really helped dampen the noise.

+1 for spare tire chain. I put a padlock through a couple of links so it cannot be dropped, few wraps of gorilla tape to snug it up in the opening. Quiet.
