I'm looking at buying a 2013 Tacoma and love the backup camera idea (for my wife) but was wondering if it worked at night? Do the back up lights provide enough ilumination for the camera?

I got the tailgate lock on mine, so my camera faces down a bit more. I also have license plate LED lights. I found that just using the stock reverse lights as light do an okay job, but not a great job.

Vent visors, backup lights, the loadhandler!
I put an aftermarket camera in and the backup lights do throw allot of usable light. I guess led or why replacement backup bulbs would really work well too.

    None...yet!
No. It's pretty dark, the reverse lights do not provide enough light. However, once you hit the brakes the brake lights help out a bit.

I can see perfectly fine at night with the stock reverse lights.

So this was a Wehlen LED bulb. It's mounted at the bottom, middle of my license plate. I love it. The picture of the reverse camera is with the reverse lights were covered. This was done on my 11' DCLB.

I have stock reverse bulbs. They provide enough light to have the backup camera useable. The problem you might encounter is if you're backing up towards your front door and your porch light is on. The glare from that might make you strain a bit to see the camera.

I found when you were reversing into something that has a light on it. The reflection can get pretty bad towards the camera. But you'd think that if people can't see going to towards something, they wouldn't continue driving towards it.

Search the fog light bulb mod that puts a fog bulb into the reverse light socket. Do that and there is more then enough light.

I have an aftermarket reverse light and it definitely works with stock reverse lights. I also did a set of PIAA fog lights under the bumper and now have Anzo leds on the bed rack. They are super bright, especially the Anzo's. I have them on a separate switch that I can turn on whenever I want. I can get a pic up if you need. Def makes it easier to backup with my dark tint so without tint would be day time bright!!!

Same for me. No issues with the cam or lighting so far, and I live out of town with no street lights for miles and miles.

Do the locks tilt the camera down more? Do you have an electric or keyed lock?

When I got my 09 with backup cam I thought it was a stupid gimmick, now I cant imagine hooking up a trailer or backing out of a parking spot without it, especially with a cap with tinted windows.

I am all stock and have no issues seeing out the cam.

I find the stock reverse lights weak, in particular when you are in the woods. You can see directly behind but very little to the sides via the mirrors or camera. I added a hitch mount reverse light from princess auto to complement the stocks. Provides lots of light for $19.99 and it has a manual override that allows you to turn on the light without going into reverse.

Works fine. This is backing in my garage before the 886 mod

After the 886 mod it is brighter (obviously)

I am using a HID kit for my reverse light and it works great, nice and bright.

I think that it does since the pop lock got installed. I got a keyed lock.
