Ok so i bought a sony back up camera for my Pioneer AVH-P3100DVD. all of the install makes sense to me minus, how the "power unit" receives its power..

What it says in the manual is "connect the red reverse wire, to the 12v power terminal of the cars back lamp lead."

my question is, where is the fricken power terminal? lol because i can hook everything else up but idk how to/where to connect the red wire to the power terminal.

this is what i have now

Here is the red wire connected to the white wire that goes to the reverse lamp. That didnt work so i connected it to the red wire going to the reverse lamp...that didnt work either....

So where is the "12v power terminal of my trucks back lamp lead"?

Ummmm did you put it in reverse? LoL. Nothings gonna happen until you do. If you've connected to both of the wires going to the light bulb, and thats where they told you to hook it up, then it will work. Power will not be provided until you put it in reverse though. You're not hooking to an ignition circuit. +rep if I just caught a blonde moment :D

EDIT, if neither still work, then check the fuse.

To power the camera connect it to blue and white accessory cable on the hu
Reverse signal from reverse light connect to Purple cable on the hu
    Ground the camera
Run the RCA cable to the hu and you're done
if you did it this way you could see the rear view anytime

Did you lose any functionality using the sony cam? I am probably going to buy a Pioneer AVH P3300BT next month but the Pioneer cam is just too much.

I'll get some pics tmrw. No issues whatsoever. Just have to get creative on the mounting process. I ended up using a radio back strap, cut to size, bent to bolt directly to the oem handle and camera. The camera is completely waterproof and works very well in bright light and in darkness. I figured for 35 bucks, I ain't losing much and I couldn't be happier. OEM handle $35 + ebay camera $35 + misc bolts = little under 90 bucks for an back up camera option.

Timely post, just completed installing the referenced Sony BU cam, no issues. My HU is a Clarion DD NX490, now need advice on what/where? to connect the purple/white reverse wire lead.

Do I need to connect this all the way to the rear? It was a PITA running the video lead to the front, there must be a reverse lead or connection point somewhere in the cab or kick panel?? Any ideas?

The red/white wire is the reverse signal to alert your headunit that your truck is in reverse. That's where mine is tapped for my Pioneer z2 headunit. Located in the driver side kick panel.

I don't have said pictures of how i mounted it. Just the finished product overall. You just have to get creative. I used a radio backstrap, cut and bent to line up with the holes on the oem tailgate handle and the bracket on the camera. It's solid and isn't moving anywhere. The camera does sit a bit lower then oem but overall I'm very happy with the results and works great for me for half the cost of an oem setup.
