    Hi Folks,

Just picked up a 2014 crew cab, my fourth Toyota truck. Any case, it came without the back-up camera. However I get a warning on my radio screen about using the back-up camera and I noticed wiring going to the bottom of my tailgate.

Can I buy a camera and just plug it in for it to work?

    Thanks

Bummer I did search and didn't see anything. I will recheck. Thank you.

I did nothing. The dealer wanted $600 for an OEM camera and $300 for an after market. Which is crazy because I am all wired up, just need to plug the camera in. Also talked to this guy on eBay that others have said to talk to, but he never responded to my second email. If you figure anything out please share with me. I just don't have that kind of money to throw around. I am putting a camper shell on soon so the camera would be very helpful to have.

There is a thread on here somewhere about the back up camera mod. If you don't have the factory install you probably don't have the rear view mirror display, so you will need the harness mod to display on the radio screen. Check the free/cheap mods thread.
That guy on eBay seems to be the best source. Others have had good luck. It's on my list of things to do too.
All models look to be pre wired, so it's essentially a plug and play mod. The '14s are probably the same as the '13s and it works on those.

OEM is always more. The camera is prob a $100 part, or less. But if you don't want to figure out how to wire it yourself, it's best to go with something already on a plug in harness.
Seller on eBay is "ckremernimrod1". Shows still two available. You need the right harness for the head display. He also has a camera anytime set up. Probably best to email him and get the right stuff for what you want. I've been watching it for about a month or so and sometimes he drops the price from $249 to $199.

Dealer wants several hundred for fog lights too. I did mine for about $90.

I have been watching his auctions for about a month myself. I just want one that plugs into my harness...I'm almost positive it's prewired, but i don't know if i have to pull the panel apart and take out the head unit to plug anything in. I am hoping that all i need plugs into whatever harness i have by the tailgate and that's it....I even have that stupid sticker bu the tailgate saying to unplug the harness before removing the tailgate.
Fog lights are on my list of mods...now i have to figure out if i'm prewired for that too and what parts/wires i need...lol

ckremernimrod1 is the guy that I was talking to and stopped responding. He did say that the 2013 and 2014 trucks are wired different. I also get the warning on my head unit and have power all the way to the plug in the tailgate. When my Pop and Lock gets here is I will scope it out more when I take apart the tailgate.

Also the dealer told me on the side that I can get the same camera for about $50 at Frys Electronics. He didn't have anymore info. other but said it will work.

he is the same guy i'm dealing with. I also am installing my pop and lock with bolt-key technology and cam pop-out tomorrow. $70 on ebay. I'll post some pics of what i see in the tailgate for you.
I want to see where my harness leads to on the camera end. It was finally warm enough and dry enough to climb under my truck to see the other end of the harness. It looks like I'm wired in pretty good. I want to see if ckremernimrod has a cam i can just plug into the opposite end. I also get the warning on my display screen about the camera.
Were you prewired for fog lights? I looked today and didn't appear to be. I only saw 1 harness, but it wasn't really that close to the fog light location.
Anyways, here's the wiring harness for the camera in my truck. I'm guessing yours is the same.

[IMG]I can't figure out how to post pics here, but here's a link on photobucket.

I can't say for certain because work blocks pics, but if nothing else you could take just about any camera and splice the + and - respectively and it should work. These things don't have all that complicated of signals. I took an OEM camera and spliced into the harness to work on my pioneer HU.

I am thinking the same thing, it's Toyota's goal to keep things cheap and simple. A proprietary camera wouldn't accomplish that goal. I have found a few waterproof cameras on eBay for about $16 that will fit in the hole and I might just give it a try next month.

I know this may be a little off topic, but it still pertains to the harness wiring....
I installed my pop and lock with the bolt technology (installation was a breeze). I also discovered that at the end of the wiring harness (connected into the dummy slot) had 4 wires. I believe that I am completely prewired from the tailgate all the way to my head unit now. I'm going to a shop to see what i can do plug and play wise. Since I believe that it is already prewired, i assume that all i need is a camera with the appropriate sized harness that will fit mine. BTW, the OEM harness/cam bracket/dummy plate fit perfect in the pop and lock.
here's some pics of the harness and the pop and lock.

Installed my Pop & Lock and bed extender this weekend, sure enough I am wired right to the tailgate. This makes me wonder why the camera from the dealer costs $600. Let me do the math on this mark-up. $15X=$600 and we end up with a 4000% mark-up!!!! Any case here is a photo of the wiring to the tailgate latch.

Do not buy from dealer...any camera will work exactly the same as the oem one because they're not some sort of fancy high def camera anyways

Look around eBay. That's your best bet
