The backup camera on my 2016 has made the mirrors obsolete. When backing out of a space, I can watch for crossing traffic from both directions in one spot. The only issue is parallel parking in front of my house. I can accurately back up to within inches of another car. I have boxed the neighbor in when i forgot. :D

I like the setup on my 2022 pro, though I mostly use the overhead view. 4K would be really nice all around especially trying to use the side cameras off road.

We have a 2019 Highlander Limited, and a 2022 Tacoma SR5. Both vehicles back out of the same garage, back down the same driveway, and back into either the same turn-around parking apron or into the street. The difference in the picture quality is highly obvious. Toyota went super cheap on numerous things on the Tacoma....the camera is one of them. No excuse for the money we pay.

Especially frustrating since the 2020+ is actually a downgrade over 2016-2019.

Noticed the same thing on my brand new 2022 DC OR with advanced tech pkg (360 cam). Cam quality is absolute garbage. Unacceptable given the amount of money they charge for this option. My 2020 tundra cam was light years better. Surprised and disappointed. Hopefully someone will find a way to improve it.

I only use the backup camera to see if I'm within the lines of a parking spot and to make sure my ass end isn't hanging over the curb / lines. My bike rack blocks most of the view anyway.
However, I do agree the image quality is shit compared to my wife's 2017 Highlander. It gets the job done though.

No idea why so many on this thread are lying to themselves - the factory rear camera quality is terrible in comparison to nearly any other in the past 10 years. It’s not acceptable for a fully loaded 40k+ Toyota. Sure you can still “see stuff” to help avoid a fender bender, but the image quality still SUCKS.

That aside… has anyone successfully replaced it with a different OEM camera, or a plug and play camera? If so - which one?

It’s an average quality camera in an average quality truck sold at the average price of a new vehicle in the US. It could definitely be better easily but we all know Toyota cuts a ton of corners on the small things to save costs in the big picture.

You are right. They cut corners. The image quality of the camera sucks. That is the problem... How about evolving this thread and talk about a solution the problem. Those who do not care about improving the image quality - just don’t comment.

What is the solution for people who want better quality? Has anyone successfully installed a higher quality camera on their 3rd gen? Which one specifically?

I was driving a brz last night and that’s when I realized how shit the Tacoma’s back up camera is. Crystal clear, high visibility at night in the subie vs the blurry mess even during the day in the taco.

That said, my camera isn’t even half as bad as what OP has. There’s definitely something wrong with that.

22 Pro here - Image quality is worse than a 2006 Lexus I owned. Really.. really poor.

Same here. 22 Pro and my 16 Off-road camera quality blows the 22 away! Ridiculous, considering the price.

These are all from my 2021. How is this quality not good enough for people. Sure other cars have better, but I dont have a single complaint about this quality

It could be only trucks with the 360 camera have the quality issue. Your camera looks like the image from my 2016 and 2019 which were perfectly adequate. My 2022 with 360 is bad.

Maybe that is the culprit. Honestly @Matt444444 pic after mine does look a lot shittier.

I don't have the 360 cam. My 2020 is noticably worse than my 2018. It's functional, but disappointing.

My wife's rearview camera on her 2017 Elantra is better than my 2021 Sport's camera...visually speaking. She also has AutoPlay in her car but her screen display is smaller.

On rainy days the camera is about as blurry as OPs first post...but other than that, I'm OK with it.

I do use my neck too...but sometimes like the camera's view of areas on the screen edges.

I came from Subaru to my Tacoma. Bought a TRD pro in sept 2020.

I thought something was wrong the first time I put it in reverse.

    It is pretty bad.

I wear glasses now for reading and some mid distance viewing. 20/20 distance.
I remember thinking wow my eyes are getting bad. So put my glasses on and well…..
realized Tacomas head unit resolution or cameras are junk. My wife’s 2019 Crosstrek is crystal clear.

Must be saving money on the pros or the tech package from what people seem to be saying
