I need to attach the wiring of my new back up camers to the reverse tail light. Do I need to take a talil light out and splice into the back up light? Thank you for your expertise. LGW

    No.

Open your fuse panel cover/coin tray under the left side of your dash. If you look up to the left you will see two white harnesses plugged in next to the fuse block. The top one has a red wire in it and that's your reverse wire that you need to tap into. Below that is your backup camera itself. One wire is the shielding and one is the center pin. If you're handy you can splice those with a yellow RCA video wire and run that back to your deck for the OEM factory backup camera feed. Assuming of course you have one that is. Either way your reverse wire is there too so don't run wires back to your taillights. That's just silly.

Now I'm confused:confused: I thought the reverse wire was in the drivers side kick panel. Red/White wire?

I was gonna mount camera to license plate, run the wire under the truck into cab under driver seat through drain grommet in floor. Plug the yellow male composite connector into video in jack (also Yellow) on rear of head unit.
Then the 2 lead wires off that one has to be grounded to metal vehicle chassis should be black on the camera harness other one should be red. The red one gets tapped into the Red/White wire in driver side kick panel to give it power when truck is in reverse.

Now on the back of your head unit you should see a wire Might be purple that also gets jumped into the red/white reverse wire in the driver side kick panel. I believe this is called the reverse sensor wire

Can someone please verify my plan of attack is correct?

I'm just going buy what i have read in a bunch of threads

I will be doing the camera install this week end. Thanks for any info or tips

^ sounds correct. Or instead of running the reverse wire all the way into the cab, tap it to the reverse bulb wire in a tail light wire harness. Then power and ground can go to your battery (or wherever) and then all that you need to do is run the RCA cable into the cab and to your headunit. Then tap the headunits reverse sensor wire to the wire you guys described in the fuse box, or you could even wire it to a switch.

I'm planning on adding a front and rear camera in the future (for offroading) so that will be a bit more involved. Haven't really thought about it yet.

Everything sounds accurate save for the part in bold. Not sure what all that is. All you need is a video cable (the yellow composite in your case) and then run the reverse wire (Purple w/white on some aftermarket units) to that red/white wire I described in my previous post. That's about all you need are those two connections for a working reverse camera. The wire tells the unit when to switch to backup mode and then the video cable sends the video feed obviously. Not sure why you would need to ground other wires or what not.

The camera it self needs power/ground no? Is this purple wire the color used by Pioneer?

    What italics?

    Doesn't the camera need power?

D'oh! You guys are right. Durr! I'm still in stock camera mode since mine had one. Completely forgot you need to power that bad boy. Easiest way is to just wire it to ACC or switched power which can be found at the trailer wiring harness. The camera will be on whenever the truck is on but it won't matter since it will just send the feed whenever it's in reverse. No need to run more wires all the way up to the cab to power the camera only when it's being used. Most installers hook reverse cameras up this way anyway because it's quicker/easier.

Again, does Pioneer use purple/white stripe for reverse sensor? This is where I'm hung up.

Do you have the deck in front of you? Should say on the wire, the top of the deck and in your owner's manual. I know that's how they are on Kenwood but it's best to check out the wiring diagram form your specific deck to save yourself some issues.

Deck is mounted, I added camera later, and can't for the life of me find manual. AVH3200DVD. I can get the camera on, by manually selecting A/V on he head, (I know the RCA jack is in the wrong spot, video in, instead of remote camera) but thats he only way I could get any image. Then I realized nothing was telling the deck to go to backup mode (purple wire) I'm hoping.

Could be a purple wire. Your problem could also be a setting in the deck. They all have different settings and come can be confusing so make sure that the settings are all set properly to override whatever is on the screen and display the camera. There's usually a few settings that can affect this and every deck is different. Google your owner's manual and all your questions will be answered.

Yep. Just need to hook up the reverse sensor wire and you'll be good to go.

I'm pretty sure mine was purple and white. Won't you have to remove the headunit to get to that wire anyway? Or did you route it somewhere when you installed it?

Nice photo JLink! Nice and simple...But the camera I just ordered from Sonic is just the opposite from that kit. My camera power wire and ground wire are not on the camera end. They are on the other end that will go to the head unit.

That's fine with me cause I would rather the hot and ground be inside the truck anyway.

Here's 2 pics of what I mean unless I'm seeing the pics all wrong. My camera should be here Monday so I'll know for sure then.

:sorry: I'm not seeing the italics either

Thanks guys, I feel sure that will take care of me, power up the purple wire with red/white, move RCA jack to remote camera input. Yes the settings can be weird, polarity, reverse image, + or - battery best I recall. I got so aggregated with it awhile back and just said screw it. Just happened across this tonight, will tackle again tomorrow. Thanks again to both you fellows, I'll let you know how it goes.

That's why I changed it to bold right after I posted it. Quotes default to italics anyway so it was all italic. Long day and didn't think of that.
