Back wall's air vents are leaking water into interior. And yours are, too.

Im just glad my whole floor board wasn't soaked. (Currently have a bunch of towels back there since its pouring down on my side of the planet). Hopefully sealing it resolves this issue.

 

My 2016 isn't leaking.

 

I think I remember reading one of the sound deadening threads where someone described installing some sort of semi porous foam in the vents at the back of the cab to help reduce noise from the rear end while still letting air move out of the cab as needed for closing doors, setting air system to outside air intake, etc. Wonder if that would also help keep water out too if its being an issue .

 

Yeah used some paracord it, pushed it out slightly added a bead pulled it in got it tight with the front seat and put another small bead around the outside while it was tight. It is damn sure not leaking i would have to hammer it out lol, this will happen to every tacoma at some point. I also before applying i turned the truck on left it running with the heat blasting and windows closed to warm up the cab after i put on the silicone i left the truck running with heat for 10. Threw on a fan it was fully dry it a few hrs

 

Update: applied some loctite marine sealant yesterday… going to run the water-hose back there & hopefully I dont get any leaks. Not the nicest looking job.

 

Did that seal up those vents?

 

It 99% sealed it. Went back and added more I missed a tiny spot on the bottom right vent clip where water still managed to drip. I’ll report back this weekend. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow and Sunday.
(It looks like crap) but just hoping it solved the issue.

Update: As of this morning, I used a water hose and flowed water on both sides for a good 5 mins. No leaks at all. Hopefully it stays put. Ended up using Loctite marine grade silicone.

 

I tested mine this morning as well and I had two small leaks. I resealed those spots and will test again tomorrow

I used the same thing that you used. I have used it before on my boat on some holes below the water line. That stuff is awesome

 

Hell yeah. Dries pretty damn quick too.

 

My 2018 is full of mold from these back seals dry rotting. Toyota recalled the 3rd brake light seal on the back of the cab not the 2 seals right fuckinh below it that are dumping water into my truck. They won’t do anything about it either

In Florida its been rain every day for weeks now, started to smell mildew and it got worse and worse.
I have custom floor mats in the back so I cant see the floor, one day I noticed white on the edge of the driver side rear passenger floor.

I was thinking the kids spilled something and it sat under the mat until it evolved into a new organism.

Had a friend treat it (does flood remediation) and went on my way.

A week later, its back and WORSE.

This time I take a deep dive, pull up the side strip and start looking around, notice the water is comming from under the floor, from the back.

I google and find the 3rd brake light recall and also for older models a rear windshield recall.

With the brake light, they are paying for the repair and any damage it causes.
I thought maybe that was my issue? But no today they text me with my service quotes.

They said its the rear vent and it will be $1200 to fix the vent and I assume also including the water inspection (but not even sure if including remediation).

I am livid to say the least because the Tacoma is supposed to be bullet proof and I got the extended warranty for extra piece of mind.

According to the dealer the warranty company wont cover this because the vent is a "trim piece" and warranty doesnt cover trim.
I call BS on that, its a vent, its a functional piece of the vehicle not cosmetic and it caused damage to the vehicle because it failed.

Being so closely related to the service campaign for the brake light, I dont see how we cant draw a similar conclusion that this needs to be taken care of without out of pocket for the customer becuase it was a flaw in the truck.

They told me my best bet is to go thru my car insurance and make a claim, but that is also just as dumb. Why pay a $1000 deductable and deal with a claim and have insurance rates go up for a $1200 repair?

I really feel like I should be fighting this, somehow.

I might have to cave in, but how hard is this to fix myself? They were saying the entire bed of the truck has to come off for repair, and all the inside of the back of the truck removed.

If I can just seal this and maybe let my friend who does the flood repair see if he can handle the water/mold issue that seems like a more sane solution.
But again piece of mind, I take extremly good care of my truck I dont want any half assed repairs, is $1200 a fair price to fix this?

Possibly more as I think the $1200 is to fix the vert and just do a "damage inspection"

I dont know any regular mechanics that would handle this kind of thing to get another quote and the longer I wait the worse things are going to be, it's still raining every single day.

 

I would walk away if they just replace them you will have the smell and the issue will come back, i forget since i sealed these a while ago but i believe the bed may need to be removed to replace them. They do not need to be replaced, i sealed them like the pictures above but i drilled a small hole on each side and attached a strap to the front seat to keep them tight to the body as the silicone dried. I dried the carpet and ran an ozone machine to remove the mildew/mold smell, this happened on my low mile 21. They are only held in with some flimsy plastic tabs its not an if but a when they leak, sadly even toyota does not make a great vehicle anymore. Everyone has their quirks but quality on everything you buy today is in the shitter, costs twice as much for 1/2 the quality.

 

It was hard for me to tell from just the pictures, but no need to get outside access at all to remediate (aka mess with the truck bed) just unbolt the seats, and all the plastics in the back and seal it from the inside right?

I was a bit worried about how hard that might be to do without breaking something or how hard it would be to get it all together again, but if its not that hard I would be willing to try.

I think the issue is with rain every single day for weeks that the issue went from bad to really bad so it may not just be a simple dry up fix. Its raining right now even and will be tomorrow as well.

I am lucky that I have a good friend that does flood remediation so I have access to professional level chemicals and equipment to get rid of the mold assuming the damage has not gone so far that things need to be outright replaced.

He told me the foam under the floor on some cars just wont dry out, but at worse I think we can fix the leak, get rid of the mold and maybe have a upolstery guy fix the floor cheaper than the dealer trying to railroad me.

 

Cant really get to it from the outside no room between the cab and bed. Its super simple im sure there is a youtube video just need to pull the rear panel and the rear seats i have an accesscab so it was slightly different. He is correct the foam will never dry on its own, the way i cleaned it/got rid of the smell. After sealing the vents, i pulled the carpet up in the rear put a dewalt fan i had to blow it dry while leaving the car running and the heat on full blast for 20-30 mins. I shut the car and left the fan going overnight, it was nice and dry. I then threw in a ozone machine which neutralizes the mold and gets rid of the smell. Last for good measure i sprayed the cabin air filter with lysol and a ton in the cab and left the truck running with the air on recirculate to freshen it up and clean the vents. Sucks that this is an issue but with a few steps you can fix the issue and not have it return.

 

Toyota must have corrected the problem my 2023 is bone dry.

 

They didn’t correct anything, you just don’t have the problem. Many don’t, but a lot of them will do it eventually.
