Also should be half of what deductible normally is. At least when my car got hit that's what happened. Not sure who I had back then for insurance. Good luck with fixin the truck before the nuptials, the brother getting his own ride soon & the upcoming matrimony.

LOL, in a hit & run with no known at-fault party? Yeah, right. Your deductible is the deductible YOU choose to pay, regardless of fault. Some companies will waive deductibles if they know another party is at fault, the other party has insurance, and there is no question to liability. But cutting a deductible in half is not part of the industry.

I was an auto claims adjuster for USAA. You'll be fine. Your deductible will be owed but it will be coded as not at fault, so you don't need to worry about your premiums rising because of it.

Question about the industry - if he was to make a claim with his Insurance, will they personally go to all the stores and try to obtain any video footage? Or with a hit & run of this calibur, just assume its a lost cause and have him pay the deductible?

With a story like this, no. That much investigation is not worth the money. Investigation typically occurs when we have a legitimate reason to suspect fraud, typically flagged by repeated "hit & run" accidents, or inconsistent damage with the story presented by the person we are insuring (or any witnesses.)

Thanks for the heads up. I'm having my brother file a police report since he technically was the one with the vehicle at the time of incident. Not sure if that's needed or not but shouldn't hurt I guess.

The police may not care to come write the report, but it's worth calling the department. Nonetheless, a report certainly can't hurt. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Yeah, LOL. WTF does this mean then?..............because this is what happened.

    http://www.douggoyen.com/uninsured-motorist-insurance.html

Uninsured Motorist Insurance limits of coverage:

Your insurer is required to offer you at least the minimum limits of liability in uninsured motorist insurance coverage for personal injury claims, but cannot increase your limits in uninsured motorist insurance to an amount greater than your liability limits under the liability portion of your auto insurance policy.

For property damage claims made for uninsured motorist insurance, there is a $250 deductible. The insured is able to choose which coverage it wishes to use for their property damage. For instance, if you have collision coverage with a $500 deductible, and you have uninsured motorist coverage with a $250 deductible, you are able to use your uninsured motorist coverage.

Maybe I said it wrong for you? Maybe the industry has changed since then? Maybe you really don't know it all? Maybe I was just trying to help the OP and wasn't just making bullshit statements to post up something for the sake of posting?

You don't know what you're talking about. The ability to have uninsured motorist coverage apply based on the scenario is WIDELY different on a state-by-state basis. Some states require identification of the driver, and proof the driver has no insurance. Others allow a plain hit & run to work. Some states don't even offer uninsured motorist coverage at all.

The information you quoted just randomly chose "if you have a $500 deductible and you have UIM with $250 then you can use UIM" - this has NOTHING to do with "cutting your deductible in half" like you were advising. That is just a random example where someone would have UIM coverage with half the deductible that they ELECTED to have their collision deductible set to.

Dude, I do know exactly what I paid to my insurance co when I was hit by someone who left the scene. My policy deductible was $500 and I paid $250 to have my car repaired and nothing you can dispute changes that. I "randomly" found something that clearly explains why in my case, in the state I live in that it was covered as such. You can say whatever you want about it. Obviously this is an example of " WIDELY different on a state-by-state basis" and my state did not require ID of the driver and allowed my uninsured motorist coverage apply which was half of my normal deductible. Keep arguing it all you want.

I'm not arguing with anyone, because I am correct, and I understand insurance contract language.

"Also should be half of what deductible normally is."

That was false. Your collision deductible happened to be twice what your UIM deductible was. End of story.

My collision deductible was $500, I payed $250 to ins co to fix my car. That is what happened and you can think you are correct all you want. Nothing will change those facts. I offered up what could be an option for OP to check on that might save him some coin. Sure it may be different in his state.

Is it really necessary for me to quote myself to prove my point? I already stated that. I am not arguing that you paid half of your collision deductible.

    Update:

After talking with USAA I may not have to my my full deductible. In the state of S. Carolina you have to have uninsured motorist coverage (could be wrong term). As long as they don't find that I backed into something (which my brother didn't) and it was indeed a hit and run, I would only be liable for the uninsured deductible of only $200. As of right now the trick is being looked over for estimate, and waiting for USAA to get back to me with the decision. Now I just need to find out how I can haggle $$$ for an aftermarket bumper lol jk......kinda

Interesting............would that be half of what your collision deductible would be? And glad your repair will be lower. Oh wait, repair cost won't change.......Glad what you have to pay ins co for it to get repaired will be less.

Nice, 1/5th of out of pocket vs. collision deductible. Even better than 1/2.
