Just thought I would bump this w/ the following update:

Did this mod back in March using a bush button factory switch and NO diode. I tapped the grey input sensing wire and the white +12V as described.

I found out today, that the TRAC OFF and CEL lights I have been getting for the past 2 months are resulting from this mod. Essentially, this mod also activates the reverse lights and by doing so, confuses the transmission into thinking that its in D and R at the same time.

I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced similar issues? Those of you using a diode, can you share specs and how you installed?

Here is the diagram I created:

Right, I used the connections you have outlined on the right side. Camera works fine with the button. Issue is that the transmission doesn't like the it. I will be installing the diode.

Thanks for sharing your experience but if everything is wired correctly, I don't see why your lights would turn on other than maybe a bad (or incorrect) switch. When I was first messing around with this I mixed up the wiring and ended up in fact with the reverse lights on. But I figured it out and they don't turn on when I flip my switch anymore. It's annoying sometimes because at night, its hard to see anything behind you without extra light, I usually step on the brake and that gives me just enough light to see what I need to see.

If you somehow put voltage on the vehicle end of the gray reverse sensing wire, that will definitely turn your lights on and give your transmission some hiccups. make sure you're not doing that.

Need to be using a SPDT switch to avoid sending 12V+ if no diode

Found another goofy side effect to doing this mod. When using the navigation, if you flip your rear camera on, the nav will throw a fit and think that you're facing backwards on the road. It will show that you are going the opposite direction you are traveling, and tell you to turn around. It was very weird seeing the compass in the mirror show the correct direction while the nav screen on the head unit showed the opposite. It makes sense though since we are tricking the head unit into thinking the truck is in reverse when it really isn't.

I'm assuming this happens AFTER you flip the switch back off?
Or are you talking about the navigation on the instrument cluster?

After the switch is turned back off. Never paid attention to the nav in the instrument cluster, but that has me curious now.

Never noticed that, but then again I hate the navigation I've never found it to be very intuitive. I usually just pop my phone out

You have something wrong with the wiring, switch, or another issue. If you follow the diode wiring, make sure the wire from the switch is connected inbetween the diode and HU, not the other side of the diode. The diagram is unclear as you only have 2 legs on the type of diode you need, not 3 as shown.

I'm planning to do this in a week or so but want to be clear on the wiring. If I use a spdt switch I shouldn't need a diode to avoid any of the side effects discussed?

What size wire taps did you all use?
    Thanks.
