With the addition of the SOS Concepts dual gate bumper, our backup camera is less than useful. My original idea was just to pull the factory camera out and relocate it.

Then I found an LED brake light/ backup camera combination specifically made for my Jason cap. It looks like the perfect way to relocate the camera. The camera itself has a four pin screw connector. The kit comes with an rca pigtail

My question is, how do I integrate the factory tailgate wiring to the aftermarket camera?

Is there a pigtail available to make it plug and play?

If not, which wires in the factory tailgate harness do what for me to splice into?

    Thanks,
    James

I looked at this as well, as I lost my rear camera with the slide in camper that extends past the tailgate. I relocated mine.
    1) open the tailgate with torx bits
    2) disconnect camera and fish it out.
    3) Relocate where ever you want.

This was pretty easy. I put mine to the right of the license plate, just drilled a hole in the bumper and connected it through the bumper. Much easier than wiring a new one. BTW, in a vertical 90 deg position, not tilted down like stock, the rear view is much better.

Wish I could help. My back up camera and headunit are both aftermarket so that works well.

This shouldn't be too bad. First you need to find out what voltage the camera runs at.

The factory camera runs on 6V, what you have probably runs on 12V.

The factory setup has 4 wires coming from the radio to the camera. Camera positive, camera negative and a positive voltage and negative voltage. The reverse signal goes into the factory radio and an internal power supply sends 6V to the rear camera turning it on.

When I put an aftermarket radio in mine, I had to build a 12V to 6V converter and take the +12V reverse input to power the converter. I also had to splice the RCA connector for the video signal.

The attached diagram is from the online FSM you can pay to access. Mine is a 2015, yours I would hope is similar, but you may want to double check.

If you find your camera is powered at 12V, you can pick up the 12V from the reverse lights. When you put it in reverse, the factory signal will put the head unit into reverse mode and turn the screen on. The reverse lights will power your camera.

In the diagram, the center two terminals, red and white, are the camera positive and camera negative. You would have to splice the center wire from the RCA cable to camera positive and splice the outer shield from the RCA cable to camera negative.

In the factory wiring where you disconnect everything, tape up and insulate the individual 6V power connections from the radio and abandon them in place so they don't short together or to the frame or bed.

Correct, camera I purchased runs 12 volts

Is it possible to power the camera from the trailer harness anytime the ignition is on and use a switch to turn reverse mode on in the head unit like the "anytime" camera mod?

That would be the yellow video feed RCA, correct?

    Shorts would be bad!

Thank you for a most helpful and informative post! I really appreciate it!

It would be possible to use the camera anytime mod to turn on the camera. The radio just looks for the 12V signal to put it in video mode. I don't see why you couldn't keep the camera energized whenever the ignition is on either.

You're correct about the yellow RCA cable.

I finally did this. With the wiring and switch kit from anytimebackupcamera.com which i installed first to make sure that system worked.
    20190712_145643.jpg

The Jason Cap camera and led brake light unit bolted in place of the regular brake light. The brake light wiring was straight forward.
    20190712_145000.jpg

The camera wiring was not bad to do but it took quire a while to get it wired out of sight and all connected weather tight.

The camera 12volt power comes from the 7 way trailer plug. I tied into the aux power circuit (it's a black wire) and just screwed the ground onto the steel bumper. That actually powers the camera when the ignition is on.

As @DaveB.inVa pointed out the red wire in the oem camera loom inside the tailgate was the positive video feed. The white wire was the negative feed. I clipped those wires inside the tailgate and fed all the camera wiring into the also.

Clipping off the yellow rca connector in the Jason kit allowed me to tie its positive (center wire it was red) and negative (or shield wire, it was black where the sheathing meet the rca)

The Jason kit came with about 25 feet of video cable and some proprietary screw on connectors. I left those all bundled up and secured inside the tailgate. Padded with a piece of rubber and it should be gtg.
    20190712_145043.jpg

The stock loom and camera is still there and if I want to return in to normal all I need to do is splice the red and white wires back together.

    20190712_145027.jpg

After its all buttoned up (with much much much testing while the wiring was being done) it works like a charm. Truck in reverse and the backup camera comes on, driving down the road, hit the switch and the camera comes on. Sweet!

Many Thanks to @DaveB.inVa ! for making this project a success!

You should place a relay inline to the camera power switched on by selecting reverse so the camera doesn't have juice when it's not needed (hot on always burns it out) -way expensive.

    upload_2019-7-12_20-25-0.jpg
Or a wire from the cab switch that selects Reverse anytime parallel to the relay pin 86 and the input to the Head Unit.

    P.S.
    they sell these...

Glad things worked out, always especially happy to help out someone from the Commonwealth! The switch makes it look slick! I have an ABS disable push button in that location that I suspect is made by the same company.

doublethebass, try www.aironboard.com, lots of cool switches!
