Backup Camera Issues

So recently my aftermarket back up camera (they are probably all the same) started acting up. After I start up my truck the back up camera always works, but sometimes after putting it into reverse for the second or third time of the day, it stops working. No blue or black screen on my headunit (kenwood) or anything. It just acts like I don't have a camera. However, If I go into my settings for the back up cam, and selected adjust lines (backup camera lines) The backup camera image will pop up, if that makes sense. I have no clue where to start looking, but will be going over the entire wiring harness this weekend. I did install this myself but I have good knowledge after installing a full speaker and amp system, and many a lighting projects. If you have any ideas let me know!

 

I have a 09 TRD Sport with the manual transmission, I had to replace the reverse light switch. Seems to have cleared up the issue for me - I had intermittent and unreliable backup camera function as well

 

Any threads on here how to do it? I have no ideas about those. Mines an 08 trd sport 6 speed

 

It threads into the bell housing on the passenger side. I swapped it out in about 10 minutes, just need a ratchet, and a crawler or cardboard is always appreciated lol. Thing there's a couple YouTube videos about it as well, but don't remember any dedicated threads about it here

 

The camera would be wired into the Reverse switch which is screwed into the manual transmission housing or tied into the Park Neutral safety switch for an automatic transmission.

A flaky connection on the reverse switch/park neutral safety switch would give you the indications you described.

Also it would work properly when you use the settings for the camera on the stereo head unit as that would bypass the need to be in reverse.

Look at the stereo wiring diagram and check where you tied into the reverse circuit. Or you could have a defective reverse/park neutral safety switch.

 

Mind taking a picture? I know I wired it right. I watched like 10 YouTube videos lol. And had a lengthy chat with crutchfield who gave me a wiring diagram

Ok, so it's on the transmission, just under the passenger seat side.

 

Seems easy enough. I'll try that out. Probably order an OEM part though

 

Hopefully it works out. I had traced the lines on my truck, replaced the camera, and basically given up, thinking I would replace the head unit and figure it out from there. But when my reverse lights stopped, my troubleshooting led me to this, which had the benefit of fixing my rear camera issues.

Yup, guess I'll be replacing the switch this weekend. Any fluid leak out while replacing?

 

Only a couple drops of fluid once switch is removed. Very clean, quick & simple replacement.

 

Whelp I replaced the back up switch but I'm still having the issue. Any ideas?

 

Wow, sorry to hear your still having issues with your back up camera (aftermarket). I'd start with checking to make sure your wiring connection is good with your new switch on transmission. Then go to your fuses and check them. And possibly checking all your wiring back to your back up camera itself inside tailgate. That's about all I can think of since I just tinker and change parts. Maybe even try a new back up camera? I bought one of these from ebay and replaced my original OEM since I cracked it's housing when inspecting it (have since glued together and keeping as a back up if needed). This new camera is still working strong after 6 months! Seller claiming it's OEM Toyota, and it's an exact duplicate of original other than serial number. Hope this helps. Keep us posted.

Ya I think I'm just going to do some wire tracing. I'm pretty bummed it wasnt an easy fix, but oh well. No fun in that!
