Backup camera quality

Just bought a new 2023 limited, all seems good except the backup camera is horrible.
Nearly not usable.
Is this normal or do I take it back.
Traded in a 2020 Camery Hybrid and the camera was crystal clear.

 

We don’t sell many limiteds, do you have the panoramic cameras?

they have to put two cameras in one spot so you lose the quality. It’s just how it is with the feature.

the base models without the 360 have way better cameras

 

The camera on my 2021 OR is pretty bad. I think it’s a well documented gripe at this point.

 

The head unit on later models doesn’t help. The camera itself, at least on the non-360 models is not bad at all. But that only shows on an aftermarket head unit.

Yes it’s bad. My wife’s 2012 Honda Odyssey backup camera is way better.

they're all the same. it's an analog camera from 2010.

 

The low rez is normal. Top view at least is handy for centering spots. The cameras collect dirt so it might help a little to clean the lenses periodically.

 

I turn my head and look when backing.

 

It funny that the camera on my 17 Tacoma is way better than the camera on my wife’s 22 Prius Prime. Not sure why they can’t get a decent image out of these things.

 

I use mirrors right up to the very end, the camera just validates distance.

Ive been putting cameras in my vehicles since 2010. I used to live near a school bus drop off, little buggers are quick!

 

You can’t do much with composite video- the resolution is already maxed out. The only other alternative is to get a separate 1080p small hd outdoor surveillance camera and hd monitor (an old phone or iPad with wireless linked to the camera works well too). That’s what I use for my trailer and now my camper on my swingout as the rear window is blocked.

 

I had read a lot of terrible reviews while waiting (forever) for my Taco to arrive. The back up camera was just one of the tech features I desperately wanted as I was coming from a 2012 Tundra. I was sick thinking I’d have a useless back up camera.

I got myTaco and perhaps because I was expecting the worst, I ended up being pleasantly surprised. It’s not near as nice as my wife’s RX350, but WAY better than my Tundra as the camera in the Tundra was in the corner of my rear view mirror = pretty worthless. I just wish I could adjust the lines so that I’d know the ball was directly under the tongue of the boat trailer- but it doesn’t or I’m too stupid. Anyway, I’m not thrilled with it, but pleased enough.

 

I’ve got a 21 Off Road with the Panoramic View Monitor. The camera picture quality is definitely trash. My next Taco or 4Runner I’ll probably skip this option.

 

It’s not just the camera it is also the screen. Finding it “unusable” seems a bit extreme, in my opinion. I believe the tech is from 2016 or so.

My custom setup but it’s focused on off-roading not backing up, lol.

 

The backup camera on my wife's 2012 Camry is much better than the one that was on my 2018 Tacoma DCLB (no panorama) and on my current 2022 Tacoma DCLB (with panorama).

 

Traded in 2023 SR 4cly for 2023 LIMITED. The backup camera is terrible compared to the 4cly. No comparison.
Backup camera and gps suck bad but everything else is GREAT.

 

The camera is definitely low res but it’s far from unusable.
