Has anyone found a reasonable solution to the stupidity of our backup camera when the tailgate is down?

Would be pretty cool if it could pivot 90°.

You want another sensor added just for this? Another part to break? No thanks.

Where exactly do you want the camera to be when the tailgate is down?

I suppose you could get a back up camera that goes on the licence plate and figure out how to wire it up. I dont think there is a solution for this with the oem camera, all trucks ive driven at work point at the ground when the tailgate is down.

Remove tail gate handle and install where your high-mount brake light is.

    /solved.

Even at this i think all you’ll see is the tailgate if you think about where the gate is while down in Relationship to the plate

IDK. Somewhere that gives me a view if what's behind me instead of the ground. I would think in the bumper or license plate frame would do that

I did an experiment years ago to see if I got better mpg with the TG down...the only thing I gained was being pulled over by the police. Apparently peeps leave their TG down often try to hide their expired or stolen plates. Who knew?

BTW I noticed no better MPG.

Good question, but not really worth it leaving the TG down.

I think the tailgate would obstruct the view from the bumper or plate and is probably why the oem camera is not mounted there.

Buy a bed rack and mount a camera to the top rear bar. Then your tailgate orientation won’t matter. Otherwise the question still stands, where would you even mount that camera with the gate down?

I don't leave it down unless I'm hauling something.

With a plate mounted camera, you could see the hitch with the tailgate down, however, you shouldn't be hooking up a trailer with the gate down. Now I can say this, I mounted a plate mount camera on my Dakota and when moving my daughter into her house I had her mattress loaded up with the tailgate down and I was able to use the camera to back right up the driveway with no issues.

An aftermarket plate cam would be the best compromise. You would have to have a switch in the cab or a separate monitor.

Ohh yeah i know it wont work well but the only other thing i could think of was to make a custom wire harness extension and move the existing camera to the bumper but the wont be much better and will probably lead to electrical problems.
