Backup camera video on a tablet

    TL;DR
    I want to hook up my backup camera to an Android tablet.

    I don't like the head unit in my 3rd gen. Haven't liked it since the day I bought it. There are some solutions out there but even the more expensive ones kinda suck with their 720p screens.

    I'm considering designing and 3d printing a mount for a tablet. The audio part is easy but I'm not sure about the reverse camera.

    I could take an analog to digital video converter and run it into the tablet but that adds the massive headache of making an app that displays everything nicely. I'm not going to do it!

    Are there any turn key products for this?

    Depending on the video format, you might be able to use a usb video capture dongle, there are existing apps for displaying that.

    Similar issue, I’m thinking about a front camera for trail view. The issue I have recently run into is aftermarket front/backup cameras say they are 1080P, but they run the video through a single RCA Jack (480i). :notsure:

    My current thought is to hookup my GoPro to an Android HU. The issue will be the cameras battery life.

    Hmmm. Hard to get the signal saying it’s in reverse into the android. Need some sort of gpio or funky wireless thing.

    I run a 7" screen for my trailer. I used to run a 5", that screen could fit easily in the left corner of the dash.

    I love them for what they are but there are plusses and minuses. :D

    They're ok for full time rear views but have a lot of drawbacks. For one, early morning and late afternoon sun starts interfering with the camera. Whenever the sun sits low it blinds the lens and throws weird glare effects.

    Also, they are such wide angle lenses that any car that appears in the far distance is actually three seconds behind. If you can see the car clearly it's already tailgating you. They are great for checking on who is riding in the left and right lanes just behind my bumper, but they are so myopic they even make a mirror look far-sighted by comparison.


    I can demonstrate:


    Here's the 7" screen: the trailer bumper is sitting in my garage threshold, note that the wall 21 feet behind is already a third of the screen away.

    Here's the old 5" screen; this is a unique selfie. My camper is being valet parked while I'm watching myself follow behind it (never change, Hollywood RV :cookiemonster:):

    Note the parked car for scale. I'm about 2.5 car lengths behind here, which would have been well within tailgating distance if this were on the road. Note how small my truck looks on the screen.

    Also also, they are cheap for a reason. That 5" set burned within a year. The camera on the 7" system is still going strong, but it's already had to have the monitor replaced. One of these days I might quit being a cheapass and replace the whole thing with a furrion system.


    The point is, if a some wildass approaches dead on your six and they are coming in hot, you won't see them until they are on top of you. Its happened to me a few times.

    Again, great for checking blindspots and wonderful for backing in between a tight cluster of trees. As a mirror replacement? They aren't great; but they're better than nothing.:hattip:

    @Rock Lobster I have a GFC with no windows. So my rear view mirror serves no purpose except to hold the tiny screen for backing up. I no longer have to deal with glare etc

    That gives me an idea. HDMI switch. It's a bit uglier than a tablet would be but it's one possible solution. The hardest part is finding a indecent monitor of the right size with an HDMI or DP Input.
