Hey all, it’s been a while since posting on forums, but I just can’t seem to find anything with differences in the 2nd gen 4.0.

I’ll start here. 185k, 06 Tacoma base 4th. Wife was driving it to work 50 miles each way as she has for the last few months. All of a sudden, she says she had her foot on the gas, itt started sputtering and died. I got there the next day, tried to start it up, and it did. It was knocking pretty hard, but did its best to hold an idle. Plugged in the scanner, showed a random misfire code, and misfires on cylinders 4 and 5. Would definitely explain the hard idle. While it was running, I pulled the oil fill cap. Plenty of air coming out, like a strong fan. Replaced the cap, and it sputtered to die a minute or so later.

I haven’t had time to tear into it yet, but I’m thinking it could be a few things. Bad occ, 2 bad spark plugs, 2 bad coils, 2 plugged/stuck open injectors, and last but certainly not least, 2 bad sets of rings worst case. Plan is to test compression and get a baseline there, that’ll tell me whether I need to go straight to plan y, and ultimately plan z. Find a motor to swap in or sell as is. I know there are differences in engines over years, so the big question is What are the major differences in years of swapping a 4.0 to another running 4.0? Basic stuff I can figure out, but I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel here. If I found a long block from a 7 or 10 or 15, can I just put it in and call it a day?

    none yet
could also be the infamous head gasket, thow that's usually 5 & 6

all years are basically the same but 12-15 have the Secondary Air Pump, but they make block off plates

05-15 4.0L Tacoma engines are mechanically the same, headgaskets were updated around 06 to a better design.

12-15 have different heads with ports for the Secondary Air Injection so to use them in a 05-11 you would need a way to plug the ports or use 12-15 manifolds and put block off plates on the SAIS ports.

Thanks for the info guys. Did a compression test on her a few days ago, everything was perfect until it hit cylinder 4. All other cylinders 155 ish, damn thing didn’t even budge from zero. Check oil and filter, and it’s more sparkly than a Richard Simmons workout video. Definitely some damage, now onto finding a motor to swap in… anyone near Colorado have one ready?

    zero compression is interesting
Can you slip a camera down the plug hole and take a look around? I would suspect a valve problem
