I had a similar situation with wife's CRV. Battery dead after 5 years so replaced it. With new battery in, no charging with engine running; 13.8V. Found out that Honda's do not charge the battery unless either the charge on the battery is below a certain level, or the vehicle is decelerating (supposedly for better fuel economy). Don't think Toyota does this like Honda.

Sounds like the alternator is charging fine, time will tell on the battery.. to me, 12.1 volts is a little low

But, it is starting the truck, so we'll see if it continues to cooperate. Over time, you'll be able to see if the battery is up to the task

    Do you really? Lol.

    My first was a 64, then a 70 followed by a 63.

It is a great trick for testing the electrical on a them.

start truck. disconnect negative of battery. if truck shuts off, bad alternator, keeps running, good alternator.

Yup. Had a 66 ragtop, a '75 fuel injection that got chopped up into a baja bug and a '65. My uncle currently owns a 71 beetle and a 70's Type 2 pickup (Transporter) with the extended cab.

A battery can still start with only 10.5v, but it will really struggle. Amps are another topic.

    Read over this:

Your alternator needs to put out a higher voltage than the battery maintains (12.8) and they usually degrade over time. Don't worry if you see lower volts in warmer weather. Grab one of these cheap volt meters and keep an eye on it from the drivers seat.

The ECM will have no ground reference, try it and report back let us know how it goes.

The alternator is grounded internally . It should work.
The electronics might not like the resultant spike but it should run without the battery connected.

I do not disagree with your statement, however the electronics do not work well on a floating ground. Should work and does work are two different outcomes. Try it and report back

It's not floating because the alternator negative terminal is grounded to the vehicle through the alternator body. The battery does serve to stabilize the alternator voltage somewhat... Somewhat because as we see the voltage rises when the engine is running.

This, it was less risky in cars made in the 1980s versus now. Not worth the risk.
