Hey guys I got in my taco today and had a horrible sound from the engine. Also had a alot of suety black/blue smoke, like a diesel. Ran fine yesterday. I open the hood and couldn't find anything. It went away in about a minute. So I shut off my truck and started it again.

    Happen again!

Sounds like a really bad knock, and the engine stuters.
    Smoke even smells like diesel.

I check the fluids and they're good.

    WTF?

I am the only one that puts fuel in the taco, and I know I didn't get diesel.
I got gas at a Am Pm last night FYI.

I only have 28,000 on my truck, What to do? Do you think the gas station mixed up fuels? Should I drive it to Toyota or get a Tow?

    This sucks

if there's no cel I'd imagine you can drive it? wait off until you get some more answers.
Open the filler tank and smell it, gas or diesel? does it run fine after the smoke goes away?
"i knew a guy" who put diesel in a ford explorer by accident and the truck ran but just barely. needed a new fuel pump and filter though.

    Sounds great.

Who pays for this? If it is diesel?

I am going to try to siphon some fuel out for a sample and some proof, hopefully!

Well if it happened to you I would imagine others were affected as well, saying that diesel was dispensed in place of gas. IN that case the station would bew liable for damages.

I just called my local dealer and they will not tow it if it suspected diesel problem?

I do have AAA so I can get them to tow but this sucks!

Oh I forgot to ask, how long from the time you filled your tank to the time you got home and shut the truck off? Did the truck idle roughly on the way home or when you arrived at your house?

now that I think of it, I'd say it's diesel you got. do you remember what pump you were at? double check it's not diesel. and contact the gas station

Not sure if the station would be liable or the distributor where they buy their gas from. The stations just buy the gas from a distributor who delivers and pumps it into their tanks. I wouldn't think the people at the station would have anything to do with it getting in the wrong tank. It happened at a gas station here a couple of years ago when my wife was a service writer at the local Chrysler dealer. The station or distributor one paid for a lot of towing and parts replacement.

    OK so called good news

I called AM PM, Manager spoke english!

I told him what was going on and before I could finish he asked what pump #.

    I said #10.

I says that pump 10,11,12,14 are on a small separate tank than the rest of the pumps, and the fuel delivery driver was sick and a relief driver put diesel in the tank about a hour before I got gas.

He asked if I had a receipt, I did since I paid with my Debit card.

He said his insurance is working on getting the vehicles affected towed and repair ASAP.

I asked where are they gonna get fixed at and he didn't know. But he needs a copy of my receipt and he's gonna have is insurance call me.

    This blows.

I would think you can get it repaired and the station is liable to reimburse you for the damages regardless of where you take it in for repairs. I think I would take it in to the dealer if the station gives you the run around, but check with them first.

Oh yea and call the local paper or TV station to pressure them into a quick resolution. Als make sure the dealer doesn't try to hose you on future warrenty work that could be fuel system related because of this, let us know how it goes for you.

Within reason, I agree. Not unreasonable to demand that it goes to a Toyota dealer. It is unreasonable to take it to 'Killer Red Taco, Inc' garage and they charge $8,000 for draining the tank ;)

All in all a crappy situation, sorry to hear that.

Sorry that happened KRT and I'm glad to hear responsibility is being taken. If it's any consolation,a guy I worked with filled his Harley Davidson Heritage Softail with diesel one day and ran it until it started knocking and smoking really bad.Once he got it all cleaned up it worked perfectly. As a matter of fact,my father bought the bike from him a year later and he ran it trouble free for many years and miles.

Agreed, you want the repairs done right by a good shop. Even if you can drain it and dispose of the diesel (leagally) yourself, they will know what the charges should be for something like this.
