So, this morning decided to go out and start the project truck, (98 Taco Sr5) and it woukdnt start. Turns over for days but doesnt even try to start. Fuel gauge shows empty, but I know there is atleast 5 gallons in it (i just put it in). Still wont start. Starting fluid wknt keep it going for longer than a second or two. Pretty sure its not recieving fuel to the injectors at all. Thinking its a fuel pump issue because I cannot hear the pump running when key is on or while its cranking. So before i even consider than further i decided to check the Circuit Opening Relay. It ohms out, and just to be safe I even jumpered +B and FP. Still nada.
Changed the fuel filter as well because I had a new one just hanging out in the back seat. No luck.

Im wondering if the pump is not working will the fuel level sending unit also not work? Because the fuel gauge is still not even functioning. I checked the efi relays as well and they seem entirely fine.

Any insight or ideas in what to check? Or ideas on confirming the fuel pump is bad before i droo the tank? Was ck sidering pulljng the bed off for frame work, so maybe ill do thst as a alternative to droppjng the tank.

    Any advice is appreciated.

When was the last time it ran??

I have seen the fuel pump socks coated with additives thepump could no longerdraw fuel

    Any Codes or Pending Codes??

If you can hear the fuel pump run while cranking you must have super hearing.

Myself I would go to the trouble of hooking up a fuel pressure Gauge before pulling the bed.

You have yet to check if the injectors are opening.

    Denso pumps for the win.

My 99 would run fine until you shut it off and would not crank until it completely cooled down 20-30 min. I chased it for months. Ended up being the fuel pump.

If neither your fuel pump nor your fuel gauge are working, could it be something in the connectors leading to them? Just a thought :notsure:

Not too hard to check for voltage ahead of the pump somewhere. Just not sure when the voltage will be there. Prolly while the engine is running. I think the wiring runs underneath the driver side sill plate from the cab to the fuel tank.

All kinds 3 inch body lift/2 1/2 suspension lift. 31/11 1/2/15 tires All work done by myself for years. The only work performed by mechanic was fuel pumps. I also have a 90 Mustang 350 hp and I can never understand how come my Tacoma gets more respect Just got a 99 Jeep TJ that I rebuilt, and painted in the garage
always found it strange how my truck would need to sit for a while then it would start. It was the fuel pump as stated before.

Okay so. Heres the scoop. As previously stated i decided to take the entire goddamn bed off the truck. Glad I did. As shown in the photo, every damn wire from the harness leadkng tk the fuek pumo was sheered off. Not sure how this happened since the truck has literally been sitting for a month, but runs weekly. So I buttconnected all the wires back together, checked the plug for power and it checked out. Now the kicker. Still wont start and the fuel pump doesnt hum or run or anything.
Is it possible ive been running it and driving it around without a fuel pump? I dont see how thats possible.

I even did the jumper trick again to see if it was also a bad relay not running the pump now that it was wired, but no go.

Im confused as hell. Somehow it was running with sheered wires and a bad pump. I dont get it at all.

Not possible for a fuel injected engine to run without a fuel pump. These trucks only run the pump during cranking so it’s difficult to hear them run. Multiple weirdness going on here. Which came first, the cut wires or another problem entirely.

They run the fuel pump during cranking to build up fuel pressure. They also run while the engine is running and some cars/trucks PWM or turn on/off the pump to control how much pressure is delivered to the injectors. I dont think Tacomas do this though.

As for the cut wires, there's 3 electrical things inside the tank. The fuel pump, The sender for the Gauge, and the Low fuel Sensor for the light. I dont have the schematics handy but it's possible the fuel pump IS connected and what your holding is the wires for the other 2 things.

I will look but there are no other wires going into the tank. This is it.
