I was thinking about this kind of thing the other day when I was cruising down the highway and I was feeling little vibes here and there. I really honestly feel that some people get fixated on some little vibe and go down a rabbit hole of parts and money when in reality it's just a truck being a truck. It isn't a luxury car (insert "but I paid $40k!" here) and there are so many little factors including the current temperature and the quality of gas in the tank and road surface from one mile to the next that just make noises, clunks, and vibes. Motor mounts are rubber so the motor can flex under load. Can they wear out? I guess. I have 240k on my truck and don't notice any motor mount problems. You'd have to beat the ever loving piss out of your truck to truly wear them out. I had a piece of shit Jeep Cherokee that broke a mount after 300k and it was a desert vehicle that saw a lot of dirt roads and washouts. When it went, the whole motor twerked to the side and the fan hit the shroud and shredded. Anyways...it's a truck. They bounce and vibe. At some point you have to just know what to ignore and what is a fix it now problem. A motor moving under load in the videos is normal.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm getting some recall work done tomorrow and I'm going to have them diagnose the issue tomorrow. We will see what they say and I will give a update.

    Thread Revival Time:

I was also told I have bad motor mounts on my 2006 Prerunner.

I too was rear ended, hard, last December. I was stopped in freeway traffic, she was doing 78mph when she hit me (said the police report). Insurance totaled it, but I took it back. I got the frame straightened and replaced the bed sheet metal. My Body Armor 4x4 steel rear bumper saved me from much worse.

When I come to a stop light my truck vibrates like I have bad u-joints (I replaced them, because they needed it but I still have the vibe). With my foot on the brake, I'll shift into neutral and the vibe stops. Then I will shift back into Drive and the vibe is still gone. I thought it would have had something to do with the transmission or the driveline.

I took my truck in to a local shop to get some other unrelated stuff done and asked them about it. They looked at the driveshaft parts (they rebuilt it). They told me my motor mounts were bad (using the motor is flexing "diagnostic").

I had my motor rebuilt in May 2023 and had new motor mounts put in. The place that did this work is researching to find out if I am under any warranty still or not. The place I took my truck to that told me I had bad mounts wants about $750(P & L) to replace them. If there is no warranty left for the mounts from the rebuild place, is the $750 a decent price to replace them? I can get the price down if I provide the parts.

no idea what you just said.

    here’s your answer.
    -upgraded mounts are good
-they are laborious to install at least if it’s 4x4
    -stock mounts are not good

I had problems with stock mounts. As many people do.
They are not a good design.
I put upgraded mounts. It solves the problem. The truck is 4x4 so it took some time to install them.

Did they also replace the carrier bearing and slip yoke in the drive shaft?

the stock Tacoma motor mounts are actually very good (vs Jeep mounts for example). Can’t see how you would destroy them without jumping the truck or continuously blasting washboard roads (the latter will break just about anything else on your truck first).

I’d say that as long as you don’t hear your fan scrubbing its shroud, the motor mounts are probably not the problem.

The slip yoke was not replaced, but all U-joints and the carrier bearing were replaced. Best I can tell, the fan is not scrubbing.
