That is a big part of his job. You went to that shop because of a quick/effortless oil change, and then they begin up-selling you. Did he explain what the process was to flush your engine?

Your truck is still young and it has had OEM oil changes since new. You can rest easy that the engine is fine, if not that's what warranties are for.

One route to ease your mind if you want is to be nice and ask if you can see if it truly is Mobil 1. If the shop can verify, then it is still a good oil in place of OEM oil. Keep up with what the manual calls for and you will have a fine running engine in lots of miles to come.

Another cheap insurance is you can go buy some mobil 1 Conventional and a filter from the dealership. Change the oil yourself and rest assured your truck was/ will be in good hands

My wife called me after taking her mother’s Jeep Liberty in for an oil change. Her $19.99 oil change was going to be over $700. She was told both diffs were critically low and if she drove away without doing the flush and fill she could need both replaced. I told her to leave and we would go back when I got off work.

I personally checked everything off their list. The front diff had never been touched so there was no way for them to know if it was low. I checked the rear and it was perfect. The transfer case had never been checked and the paint marks were intact just like the front diff.

They were spec’ing synth oil when it doesn’t require it. Basically she was getting the female invoice upgrade if you catch my drift. She paid the original $19.99 and I called the franchisor head office and documented every issue.

Sounds like rubbish and don't be too concerned about the brand of oil. Not much of a difference except marketing. For example mobil 1 is great at marketing their oil.

    Think of it this way..

They are selling basic oil changes SO CHEAP that he HAS TO sell you something, ANYTHING just to keep the lights on and keep the place profitable. Forget about him actaully knowing the basics of automotive lubrication. Anyone with any valuable automotive knowledge is going want a salary that the lube shop cannot afford to pay..

My advice is to stop going to these cheap $19.95 oil change places. If theyre not making any money on the oil change they HAVE TO MAKE IT UP SOMEWHERE ELSE

They can fill their tanks with the lowest grade garbage oil and call it whatever they want, how would you ever know?

When I was in HS I worked at a quick lube and I was fired for telling the owner that he was scamming people by filling up all 5 tanks with the same low grade conventional oil, but claiming 2 were synthetic and 2 were premium conventional oil.

I change mine at 3k every time on all my cars. I use factory filters and quality conventional oil. Its still golden when I change it. Once I went 5500 miles between an oil change because of an emergency road trip, oil was still gold like honey.

The guy is scamming and upselling. Just like the $30 wiper blades, $10 pine trees, and $15 keychain. All garbage stuff they buy from the same supplier as dollar general.

If you can't or won't change your own oil, take it to the dealer. Never a quick lube.

My question to you would be... as EASY and CHEAP as it is to change your own, why would you let anyone else do it? Seriously... watch a 5 minute video on this very site, and you're equipped to do your own changes.

Extreme climate of South East Michigan? Haha. Every oil change shop in America has some reasoning as to why where they are constitutes extreme conditions.

If you've read any of the dealership horror stories posted here or know about it from personal experience, a bad oil change can be had from a dealer about as often as a Quick Lube. They both hire the same caliber of employee to perform this service.
You would have to search high and low to find an easier engine to change oil on than a 1GR-FE 4.0L 2nd Gen Tacoma.
Buy a drain pan - a 14mm socket and 3/4" ratchet - a simple oil filter removal tool and funnel. Pour used oil back into empty 5 qt. jug. You are good to go. Many places like O'Reilley's accept used oil.

Oil isn’t cheap insurance because changing your oil too often doesn’t ensure anything. You could change your oil every day, it won’t change engine health. You just waste time and money.

The guy in the shop is an idiot. Ignore him and move on.

Unless he ran a lab test on the oil, he can’t tell it’s bad just by looking at it (provided it’s not sludge).

    Don’t let it bother you.

I tell people I’ve run oil with 20k mile OCI. People will shit all over themselves because they don’t live in this century.

Never heard of a $12 engine flush.

Take it to a dealer or a trusted independent mechanic(prefer the independent mechanic but if you must dealer is better than a quick lube)

If you want to attempt it yourself get a fumoto oil valve and your oil change become a 10 min job or less. If you don’t have the space some cities have self service rental garages with tools. For an oil change they might charge you $15 for a bay.

Definitely never take it to a quick lube place ever.
