I would be demanding an extended warranty on their dime and I'd push it to toyota corporate if they refused. I would also demand they document their screw up in writing including the date, what they did, and how much oil they had to add. It takes a very short time with no oil pressure to cause damage.

Of course it won't hurt, unless it was HIS truck.

They wouldn't change my oil at 5,000 I took it to an independent dude.

    Glad I did.

From what I've read I have a new code to live by:
Never, EVER, for the love of gawd and all that is holy let the dealer touch your car.

I have always done it at 500 miles on a new vehicle, 10 hours on small engines. The amount of break in material discoloring the oil is usually far more then one expects. By 5K miles, the oil is dark enough from normal blowby that it's not noticeable.

They did my 5000 mile inspection free but I paid 76.00 for the oil and filter change

The guy that came to your house, did you actually watch him put a filter element into the housing?

I have always done my own oil changes. The only time the dealer saw my taco was for the fuel pump recall.

Just remember, at least at my dealer and likely most others, the oil change/tire rotation/fill in the blank maintenance is 95% the hired hourly help. You are not going to get a Toyota master technician doing your free oil change. They make more money because the dealer wants them to do the more profitable work, not your tire rotation.

When I went for my first tire rotation, I got home with a lug nut missing and the others on that wheel barely hand tight. Could have killed me or somebody else doing 50 mph on the way home. Truck never saw the dealer again unless it was warranty/recall related.

Have you seen how difficult a time places everywhere are having to get people to work? They will take what they can get to do that work. Keep that in your mind when saving $40 and 45 min of wrenching by getting that free service on your $35K+ investment

sorry, but ain’t buying this… I can change the oil, grease the chassis and rotate the tires in thirty minutes with an old, rusty jack and some basic hand tools.

i did the first oil change since the dealer wouldn't do it at the interval i wanted.

back in october '22 when i was closing in on 10K miles i took it to the dealer for the first free oil change. prior, i removed the skid plate because i wanted to make it as easy as possible for them and, i wanted to inspect it afterward.

after i returned home i found a small amount of oil around the filter housing. i checked the oil level and it was full thank goodness. my first thought it was residual and wiped it off. i took the truck for a short drive and let it sit overnight. the following morning i found more oil. i never did find the cause or reason for the leak other than the housing seemed to be over-tightened. since i had a spare filter, i removed the filter housing and changed the o-rings, filter, and re-installed. i added a few ounces of oil.

my dealer is about 50 miles one-way and i was not going to have it towed or drive there to have them inspect.

also, the red cover was never put back on the positive battery terminal (they test the battery as part of the service) and they never fastened the clips for the air filter cover.

shame on me for not inspecting it before i drove off from the dealer.

i took photos and notified my salesman via email. i was polite and was not requesting anything other than an oil filter. i never heard from him. a few weeks later i received an email from either the GM or SM (can't recall) asking how my recent service was. i replied and copied the GM, SM, and my salesman, and attached the original email along with the photos. sometime later, maybe a couple weeks, i called a left a message. to this day i never heard from anyone.

when i first arrived for my appointment, the service advisor told me they use mobil 1. within the first 1000 miles i noticed the oil was much darker than the toyota factory oil. by about 4-5K miles when i changed the oil again, the oil was very dark. this may be normal for mobil 1 but to me, it seemed odd and made me question what oil they installed. my truck seems quieter and to run a bit better with the toyota factory oil that i put in, but admittedly that may be in my head given the experience.

needless to say, that was my first and last visit to the dealer for service outside of any warranty or recall which i hope is never needed.

as for the location or option to go to another dealer, the next closest is more than 100 miles away. we desperately need another dealer nearby.

Brought mine in for an oil change and rotation yesterday since I still have 2 more free ones and they put a bad scratch above my driver door handle…. Have to go back for them to fix it in two weeks. I’ll also never go back now. It’s really unfortunate that’s the type of thing you deal with at the Dealer where it’s more expensive than everyone else.

A young and always wasted, somewhat distant relative works in the oil pit at the local dealer. That alone is enough to scare me away from having them do my oil change, free or not!
