So I’ve been having this weird, intermittent lagging/loss of power issue as of late.
Sometimes it’ll feel like I’m towing a trailer. Mostly seems to happen the warmer it gets outside.
Had some 02 codes pop up recently, and replaced both sensors, good to go there.

I’ve had an issue similar to this on my old 96 3.4 tacoma, and replaced the TPS, and seemed to have fixed it then.

I cannot recreate this issue, it’s just random, comes and goes.

Plotting AFR, and 02 input, doesn’t seem like the truck is doing anything odd in those regards during this problem.

MPGs have dropped a bit overall, as well.

Just seems like I’m towing a trailer, mixed with a little bit of surging.

Anyone else have an issue like this?

    10k ago.
Though I did not pull the throttle body off to clean it, I just opened the butterfly valve and wiped it down.

assuming you have a scanner ,watch the down stream O2 sensor and the short term fuel trim . Pay close attention to the monitors using mode six on the scanner which can give an indication of a misfire. If the miss-fire is bad enough, your check engine light will illuminate .

Yeah, been monitoring the 02s, and they don’t seem to be doing anything funky at the time of this issue.
AFR is pretty constant at around 14-15:1

The scanner I’m using is just the torque app on an old android tablet I’ve got, so I’m able to plot and log.

    I’ll check STFT, and LTFT.
I wanna say the last time I saw STFT it was around 7.

Still have the issue. Haven’t cleaned the throttle body yet. Planning on this week sometime.

Was gonna do it last week, but we ended up buying a new (to us) car for my wife, and then the holidays. Could not find a time to do it.

Gonna be cleaning the TB, and then cleaning the screens for the VVTI actuators. At least the TB first, one of these nights when I get home from work. Maybe the actuators this weekend when I have a few hours to spare.

    I’ll keep this thread posted.

Start with cleaning your MAF, I had this issue and I ended up having to replace the MAF.

MAF has already been cleaned. Didn’t really seem to make a difference.

No codes at all, that’s the frustrating part. Had 02 sensor codes pop up a few weeks ago, but found that I had a bad downstream sensor on bank 2. Replaced the sensor, and code went away.

It’s obvious that something is array, as there are times when the truck runs noticeably better, and other times when it feels like a 4-banger.

Well, I finally cleaned the throttle body, and went ahead and pulled the MAF and cleaned it again with MAF cleaner.

Have driven about 150 miles. MPGs seem to have improved some, but not where they used to be.

Definitely seemed to make a difference, as it was prettt dirty, but now it seems another issue have cropped up.

There is a hesitation now when you first step on the gas, almost pseudo surging.
Like, you hit the gas, head RPMs climb then get kinda dragged back down, like a slipping clutch. No way it’s a bad clutch, as this is a stage 2 URD clutch with maybe 10k miles of very experienced driving.
This issue is definitely noticeable. On the freeway, I can give the gas pedal hardly any gas at all, and you’ll hear the throttle open up, but the truck will not accelerate. Acts like there is a clogged fuel filter- which I doubt. Installed a new URD fuel pump and filter about 20k ago.

This gas pedal range where it does it is right where I’m normally giving it gas when freeway cruising, which is super shitty, because it forces me to drive a little faster.

Fix one thing to break another.. ugh.

Lol, didn't even notice that. I really think you should check them just to be sure. It took me a long time to figure that problem out. Good luck.

I’m definitely going to do that, as soon as I’ve got like half a day to set aside.

How long did it take you to pull the screens, and clean them, and check the solinoids?

Couple of hours. Driver's side needs to have the alternator moved aside. Make sure you test the solenoids too. Gotta do both the screens and the solenoids. They work together.

Did this start happening after cleaning the throttle body. It’s an electric throttle body so your not not supposed to clean it on the engine. I forget where I seen or read this but it’s suppose to be off the engine. I cleaned my on the engine and after the cleaning it would feel sluggish and and my rpm would surge slightly up and down. What fixed mine was resetting the ecu by unplugging the battery and letting sit for an hour or two. All good after that.

Went through the same issue recently. Cleaned the throttle body & MAF sensor first with no change. Proceeded to unplug TPS and hit it with contact cleaner and been good so far.
