Hola Francisco! Welcome to TW (Tacoma World)... I am sort of new myself, got active here after getting my third Tacoma (a 2010) last December.

I sure would like you to join us, but it is foolish to try this camino malo with anything but a good four wheel drive with locking rear differential or traction control (limited slip/ A-TRAC, etc.).

There is an amigo from Tijuana going alone in a 4X4 Dakota with a locker and good tires... perhaps hitch a ride in with him? Take a good look at the YouTube videos from 'BajaRoadrunner' a Mexicano with a Cherokee, and see this is one tough trail!

    Hope to meet you!
    Hasta Pronto!

Okay, when we meet up and my Tacoma looks a little naked, it's because I removed all four mud flaps today for the Santa Maria trail... they will not last as the rock crawling will pinch them right off! See you in a week at El Rosario or the next day at Santa Ynez... Let's have fun and enjoy the best of Baja!

A reminder for those who want to avoid setting up one night camps going to or from this run, contact the Baja Cactus Motel in El Rosario to reserve a room for Friday and Sunday nights... Email Antonio at info AT bajacactus.com and tell him you are on the Mision Santa Maria run. El Rosario is 77 miles from Santa Ynez (1.5 hrs.). We plan on arriving at Santa Ynez for the start about 10 am Sat. There is camping and meals at Santa Ynez. So far only one TW member has confirmed going via private message... but 10 Baja Nomads are in. Look forward to the photos after we get back!

Warning: "Fake" checkpoints stopping travelers in and out of Mexico

    http://www.kold.com/Global/story.asp?S=12529168

    By Mark Stine

Nogales, AZ (KOLD) - The U.S. Consulate in Nogales has a warning for travelers going to and from Rocky Point.

They say they've been getting reports of unauthorized police checkpoints set up at night along Highway 8.

Reports from those passing through the checkpoints indicate those running them, are asking drivers to show identification before letting them pass.

What has officials worried is that some people have been shot and killed in the past after failing to stop at fake checkpoints.

The Consulate is urging people to travel on Highway 8 only during the morning and early afternoon hours.

If you are stopped at one of these checkpoints, the U.S. Consulate says:

Do not resist. Cooperate immediately and fully.
Stay calm, put up your hands and comply with demands.
If you have a child in the car, immediately alert the checkpoint operators of the child's presence.
If you are a victim call the Consulate at 1-631-318-0723.
U.S. Border Patrol says check the following for legitimacy

The vehicle is not properly labeled or there are misspelled words.
The license plates are not government issued.
    Inconsistency with checkpoint operator's uniform.

KOLD News 13 will continue following this developing story South of the border.

Makes it kind of an adventure!

Seriously, that is in Sonora not Baja California. I follow reports posted by people who travel in Baja daily (on BajaNomad.com) as well as people who live in Baja. There has not been any assults on tourists reported. ;)

We also are traveling during the day, which has been a recommendation for the past 3 years. However, if it makes you nervous you won't enjoy yourself and shouldn't go. See the photos when (if) I return!

I HIGHLY recommend you read this trip report from a family's trip down Baja, with a wife that was affraid to go after reading such news stories... it speaks volumes on what a Baja trip is really like and how wonderful the people of Baja, Mexico really are!: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=45821
