I was pretty set on getting this until I read this. I love the design, fit, and weight handling, I just wish it didn't leak so much. Any other suggestions?

I had a G2 on my 2009 SR5 DCLB for 5 years and never had any issues with what I'm reading about in here. Sure there was some moisture that seeped through near the end of the bed where the tailgate latches on but everything stored inside the bed was always dry. Reading this review and everyone's issues with leaking is really making me think twice about BakFlip. I really, really liked their product but I never had to trouble shoot and utilize work-arounds. For the type of money you're spending on a BakFlip the fuckin' thing better work correctly right out of the box.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this MX4 model the one where you can open/close the tailgate without having to lift the last flap up? That was the only thing that drove me nuts about the G2 but it wasn't a deal breaker. Is the overall consensus to just forget about BakFlip and seek another folding tonneau? I do have a need for one on my 2016 TRD DCLB.

i would assume the G2 cover would have the same leakage issues that the MX4 would have? I'm just about to pull the trigger on the G2, it seems like the best cover for my needs,

It looks like no matter what cover you purchase you will run into problems with leakage due to the design of the rails that Toyota put into the 3rd gen. :annoyed:
I'm trying to decipher some of the instructions on where to utilize the RTV or black silicone prior to installing the cover. I think I'm just going to pull the trigger on the MX4. I need a cover. You'd think that after nearly 6 months of trouble shooting this that BakFlip would have either updated their instructions and included a tube of RTV/black silicone or had the engineer redesign the cover.

I'm in the same position as you, I need a cover and I do like the G2, so most likely I'll pull the trigger on one and then add silicone if i need to

New Member: Hi Everyone! Great information on this site!

Bought the MX4 for my brand new truck and unfortunately hadn't found this awesome site. Very disappointed since I drilled the drain holes for the hoses as BAK requested. Now that i saw some of the alternate options i would have much rather used the one above the wheel well. ugh too late!:angrygirl:

Good news: Since i have to remove all the rails again to add silicone or weatherstripping (leaking along walls) i am upgrading to the new Bak F1 which now comes with the weatherstripping similar to that of the MX4 to open and close the tailgate without having to open the cover.

Will be trying the method from @tekoma and already ordered the neoprene waterproof weather stripping 1/4 x 1/8.

If anyone has any other suggestions to seal the rails (other than weatherstripping) please let me know.

My understanding is that i should take off the bulkhead again and put bead of seal underneath correct?

Anyone who was wondering, I heard back from Toyota and the drilling will apparently not void any warranty since it is not an item that is covered by bumper to bumper or power train.

I have a bakflip HD. Which is the older older of the MX4. I have to close my tailgate before the cover. But besides that. I think the cover is great. I was lucky enough to have read the thread about not drilling first.

The additional weather stripping added to the side rails per my post is working great. No need to use silicone. Don't forget to add additional gasket at the front of the rail where it butts up against the bulkhead. Bak preinstallec a piece but it was in the wrong spot. You can try adding a piece before installing or stuff it in after. I still have no silicone whatsoever.

I am still getting a few drips at the fold seams. Others are having this issue too. Personally it doesn't bother me, even after going through pressurized car wash it barely leaked. I think the water is wicking from the split in the seal at the rails.

@tekoma. Thank you so much. Since it ia all coming off again would you recommend taking of the bulkhead and putting either silicone or a weatherstripping under it since I had originally removed it to put the end caps on?

I actually replaced it even the first time. I had 1/16" thick EPDM laying around so I replaced what was there. Not sure how much potential there is for water to go through there but i figured it wouldn't hurt. You'll probably have enough of the new 1/4" wide x 1/8" thick side rail foam to replace what's under the bulkhead.

Let us know how it goes. I'm still on the fence as I really don't want to drill my bed at all or any part but I may have to change my mind.

After a week of being upset I'm finally over having drilled the bed. ;-) I did majic marker the hole and now doesn't look bad. Make sure you drill slowly with a cone drill.

Just wanted to bring this thread back incase anyone is still looking to pick one of these up. I installed mine today using a few of the tips i found in this thread, mostly from @tekoma . I added a strip of some epdm along the side rails, and put a nice sized piece of the "extra" seal that bak sends between the side rail and the bulkhead. I also did use the bulkhead seal. Also added a picture of how i did my drains. i didn't feel the need to go out and buy anything different, i just put them out the side of the bed so they didn't interfere with my bedrug. Ill report back after it gets wet, fortunately for me i do park in a garage though so I'm not SUPER concerned with a little leakage.

I too followed the great instructions from @tekoma waiting for it to rain to give you feedback. BakFlip F1 is really nice and does have the back triple seal. I used weatherstripping under and over bulkhead, under rails, end of rails, very little silicone on corner of bulkhead.

May need to get a tailgate seal. Not sure yet.

Note: don't overtighten the handle screws (that hold the whole cover down) since it can cause the lid to dimple and or crack.

I tried the fibermax and it ended up leaking like a sieve. I ended up getting the undercover elite and haven't looked back. I'm not a fan of full hard tops, but it does the job exceptionally.
