I’m am at a crossroads. I’m getting new tires and I want to balance them right and have a smooth ride for many miles. I off-road a lot and I am not sure to get either standard weights on the wheel or get counteract beads. Anyone have experience with this

No single method is going to be 100% perfect forever and anyone who tells you it will be is a liar. Best option I have seen is to get road force balanced, and then re-balance them as needed when they start to get less smooth. YMMV.

Why not get the tires mounted, wheels balanced then add the balancing beads? They could counteract any mud or debris weight stuck on the wheels or tires from off-roading. Or if the wheel weights come off when off-roading.
My front tires have both weights and beads and back tires have only beads. So far so good. I used Magnum+ beads which are too large to pass through the valve stem so I had to break the tire beads with my $40 HF manual tire tool to pour in.

Get "ride match" done at your local discount tire. People tend to call this many different terms but bottom line it is matching up the high point of your tire to the low point of your wheel for the best possible position of your tire when mounted on the wheel. Results in least amount of vibration possible for that assembly of tire and wheel combination.

Discount tire won't do it unless you ask and sometimes it will be done for free but I think most of the time there is additional charge. I haven't worked for discount tire in many years so I don't know what the procedure is now. If you get someone who knows the GSP 9700 (or whatever the new version is called now) very well, then you will be satisfied, guaranteed.

Oh and make sure they do dynamic balance. Not static balance. Those tire monkeys at the tire shop tend to get lazy on the heavier 4wd tires and wheels and just slap on a lot of weights down the middle of the rim only.

    So you have them balanced

If you are referring to RoadForce, this is not done on new tires. Nor is it supposed to be. The tire has not settled.

Wrong. All new tires for Tacoma are phased matched (after they are mounted on the rim) and then measured for road force value in newtons to make sure they meet certain spec. RH1 spec to be exact. Same for Tundra and Sequoia as well.

I agree with you the tire doesn’t always settle right away however.

Been in the tire and wheel assembly business for OEMs for over 18 years now.

I performed this on new tires at Discount Tire as well if the customer paid for it or complained of vibration after new tire installation. I haven’t worked at discount tire in over 20 years now but I can’t imagine this not being done now as well if the customer asked and paid for it.

Maybe where you work, the rules are different but to say all new tires haven’t settled is false. Tire and wheel matching is like a marriage. It can be a good match or not. Lots of variables involved.
