I did pony up for OEM. with these Toyota’s it’s worth it in my opinion. My peace of mind is worth more then money with this truck. Lol

So I have original factory LBJ with 319k miles on it. Will I get a new free truck from Toyota?
I'm checking them from time to time and still can't justify the work for replacing them. And I still have a brand new OEM set in the box.
By the way, this thread reminded me that it's time to check my LBJ again :fingerscrossed:

The problem with "inspecting" lower BJs is that the amount of "play" for a BJ to be out of spec as per the manual is so small, that if you notice ANY play it is already way out of spec. Better to just replace them at regular intervals.

Personally, I'll be replacing mine about every 3 years or so. I had those "crappy and dangerous" Moogs for 6 years and they were fine when I took them off a year or so ago (they didn't have any perceptible play in them...).

I figure since my taco is now 90%+ off road I'll replace them at shorter intervals due to harsher conditions. I'd do that regardless if they were OEM or 555's (or even moogs), so I split the difference and went with 555's which are nicer than Moog, but not as expensive as the OEMs (555 is an OE suspension manufacturer).

With the store brands, I'd definitely take advantage of the replacement warranty. Replace them every 2 years no matter what, maybe sooner depending on the limitations of the warranty...

Hey guys... Another victim here as well. I checked with the dealer and my truck does not fall under the recall.

Question, can anyone point me in the right direction as far as ordering parts. I'm not really good with the mechanical side of things so I don't have any idea what to order. I am going to sell my truck in about a year so I don't want to dump too much into it. I've been reading the forums and see OEM, 555, Auto zone, etc... I've tried searching RockAuto but it gets a little confusing because they don't have the same brand of Uppers to match the lowers? Is it ok to use MOOG for up and AcDelco for lowers? I also need a new ABS line, no clue how much I should be spending.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was thinking about that... Any Idea of a decent cheap brand if that makes any sense lol. Odds are a family member is going to want it. Surprisingly I am constantly getting phone numbers left on my windshield from people in the neighborhood wanting to buy.

There are powerful arguments here for using OEM ball joints, and I'm pretty much convinced; I want to keep my truck indefinitely, and I'd like to improve on its durability and reliability if I can.

However, there is an issue that I haven't seen raised in the various threads on this subject.

From what I can see, OEM ball joints have no warranty, whereas many aftermarket parts have lifetime warranties. For instance: No warranty I can find from Camelback; lifetime warranty from O'Reilly or RockAuto.

Is the OEM part really so much better that it's worth paying another $100 every few years versus getting a new one for free?

Why do you need warranty if you are not going to use it? I remember Hundai came with the concept of 10 years, 100k miles warranty to bump up the new car sale. Did it make the Hundai car better than Toyota, which has 3 years, 36k miles?

Lifetime replacement warranty is just a marketing thing to bring customer to thinking "what the heck, if it brakes I can replace it for free". In may cases "free" is not - either failed part caused so much other expensive damages or at least there is a cost of removing old part, get to the store and install the new one. Not saying that it is for these brands of LBJ, but quite often "free replacement" can't be executed as the old part number is not available anymore (the trick often used by stores selling tools) and "free replacement" has fine print that only if replaced for the exactly the same part number.

Are you suggesting that I'll never need to replace this ball joint again if I get OEM?

It's hard to know for sure, but the guy at O'Reilly claims that they'll replace it no questions asked if it wears out.

Right, fair enough, crap parts with a lifetime warranty do not really save you time and money overall. However, are decent parts with a good warranty better than top-of-the-line with no warranty, especially on a part that you'll probably have to replace at some point anyway?

I think that subject was beaten up to death. Multiple times. All depends what makes you happy: get it done with expensive OEM, one time and forget it for a long, ling time or put "free replacement" cheap part, and babysit it all the time, replace occasionally. An if you forget to babysit it, then have a tow truck ready (and fat wallet for the front end rebuild, which does not come with that LBJ warranty).

Some, who do heavy off road which will abuse LBJ and do their own work would go for free replacement type, as they babysit it anyway and will replace it frequently - that is a toy truck. Some, who use the truck as a DD and "can't afford" for frequent "down time", will go with OEM - set it and forget it, like you would expect from normal reliable daily driver.

Jesus fuck just buy the OEM. my 01 LBJs were original and replaced under the recall about 10 years after manufacture and and about 120k miles. BUT THEY WERE STILL FINE.
