Salary caps don't exist for parities sake, they are a way of protecting the owners coffers since either the owner or the GM often fall in love with college boys or superior athletes and give them way too much money.

Ever seen NBA or MLB front offices mortgage their testicles for some unproven HS kid? Kwame Brown anyone? Hell, even Kobe Bryant, but Kobe is like hitting the lotto.

It keeps badly ran teams from going too far into the red. Parity was just a perk of the salary cap.

    Disagree

    Agree

Salary caps in all sports are to create parity and allow smaller market teams to compete with larger markets, actually that is parity. NFL has a hard cap because revenues are split up evenly. NBA has a salary cap but they call it a soft cap because there are exceptions to go over the cap like signing your own players. MLB has luxury tax and revenue sharing, while it is not a cap it does allow smaller market teams to "try" and compete with larger markets. While there is a huge discrepancy in MLB the union is just too strong to go to a hard cap.

Notice I didnt mention NHL, I dont know a lot about it so I didnt want to speak out of turn. Also I dont consider it a sport! Ha ha, jk OZ!

You can't compare the two. Sports are childhood dreams...kids will spend their summers at camps, parents buy lessons...those guys have been swinging a bat since they were 5 years old. Anybody can get a job and compete for a promotion.

In the end, it's all entertainment. Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus make that kind of money too. Just depends on what the public wants. Everybody wants a facebook, so Mark Zuckerberg gets overpaid as well.

lol.. So nobody has a childhood dream to be a firefighter or a CEO? believe it or not there are other types of camps than sports camps.. Parents pay for tutors, for college, for better education. Its the same thing.. All major sports are businesses, its all about getting the best and making the most money. Just like any other job.

The NFL did just fine with a class of haves and have nots, just ask Pittsburgh, San Francisco, or Dallas.

You are right, but the reason it provides sustainability is because front offices couldn't stop themselves from overpaying athletes.

This is an excellent example of defining overpaid. Owners are wealthy and often highly intelligent men, why did they have to institute a salary cap if they all knew their operating costs and didn't run their teams into the red? Simple answer is they didn't. They LITERALLY were paying more for an athlete than their business could afford.

If you argue that caps provide sustainability, then you, by default, are arguing that it protects the front offices from putting any team in the red.

It's not about individual teams over spending , it's about allowing smaller markets to compete and therefore survive , thus providing parity and providing league stability and I hate it when people try to tell me what I'm actually saying

    No... that's golf.

And it's more boring to watch than baseball, but it's a lot more fun to participate in.

And all the salary cap does is socialize the payroll.
Team gets X amount to spend on the entire team for the season.
"Sorry superstar, the income you are generating for the team is going to have to help pay for these rookies."

The NHL's salary cap is indexed to the financial success of the league and goes up and down annually

Should be indexed to the team's ability to draw spectators and advertising revenue.

Oh wait... we have that without salary caps.

Except in the NHL, it is socialized across all teams since it is based on the income of the league, rather than the individual team.

Why should your pay be based on the success or failure of a rookie carpenter in Toronto? It should be based solely on the quality of your work, what your customers are willing to pay you, and/or the number and quality of customers that you are able to draw to your prime.
