The teams are free to pay a player as much as they want , they just need to keep below the cap for the rest of the team combined for that season

Ok which do you think is more difficult to obtain? A career in FF or LE, or a year in the big leagues? People with dreams of being a firefighter or a CEO probably have a pretty good shot at being one at some point in their lives as long as they stay out of trouble and work towards their goal. But to make it to the top in sports? Even the most motivated player has a very small chance due to how competitive it is.

Like I already stated, people want to see these players...just like they want to see entertainers. I just believe the salary of an athlete is more justifiable

There are 500 fortune 500 companies. There are 31 baseball teams with what 25 players each? Its the same thing..

You mentioned earlier about people working their way up through the minors.. same deal getting to a CEO spot. Sports are a business. You get promoted and demoted and paid better or worse depending on your performance. You can even be fired. They are the same thing.

This is a great topic of conversation. The one thing I don't get is why all the hate for those who are successful and trying to capitalize on a skill they posses. If you don't care for it, don't pay your hard earned money for tickets, Jersey's, posters...etc..Personally, I think actors and singers are more overpaid than sports stars.

If a team owner wants to sell the farm and overpay a player, that's their perogagtive. It goes to show that a team that has money to blow to overpay for a few players doesn't translate to success on or off the field; for instance, the Washington Redskins, Dallas Cowboys, Oakland Raiders. Most of these overpaid players have no other tangible skills in the real world, let them get paid, and hopefully better their lives for the short time they will have in the limelight. Unfortunately most go broke and blow their cash.

No hate here just think they make too much. I'd rather money go to someone willing ti risk their lives for this country than someone just to entertain.

See...I agree with you -Let them be paid what they are worth. The problem is the society makes them "worth" so much. The off-field/court antics, the unsportsmanlike behavior during games, and the general entitlement to anything they want are all by-products of peoples "appreciation" of them as entertainers. Meanwhile - soldiers, teachers, and EMS/fire type personnel risk their own lives to help others and get paid peanuts for it.
It's not a problem specifically with what ball players get paid...It's a problem with what society thinks...

Remember thought to look at the big picture. Decreased ticket cost and decreased memorabilia cost = reduction in labor force on both fronts to make up for it. Greed is a big driving force, and owners will do whatever they can to increase their personal profit.

It is not a hate for THEM, it is a disgust for the system. As for your comment about not buying tickets and such, you have to also realize that there are sponsorship $$ in the BILLIONS being spent on athletes everywhere. You can't avoid it unless you never buy anything. Do you think that all of this money comes out of the air? No, it comes from our pockets every time we go to the store and buy anything from soda to cereal or chips. So in the long scheme of things we ARE still paying them, regardless. The player gets their salary from the teams. The teams get the majority of their income not from ticket sales, but from sponsorship money. The sponsors, in order to still keep THEIR profit going for their big money houses charge a higher price for their products. It all still trickles down to the consumer, whether we want to support it or not.

    X2 right there!

Seeing as I currently serve this Country, I don't see it that way. Like everything else in life, I was presented a choice with known varaiables, I knew full well when I raised my hand that I was doing so for a meager living, but did so anyways and haven't looked back. I would like to believe that many of others who serve do so with the same mind set, it's not about the money, but for a greater calling.....sports and etnertainment really can't say the same.

I know its not about the money.. I wasnt saying people should do it for the money. I was simply stating that IMO someone who entertains isnt as valuable to this country as someone who serves. Thats my opinion though

Well the same thing could be said about society in realtionship to cars, houses, cell-phones and anything else material in nature. As for us both being military, you know that our service isn't about the money, but about fulfillment and a calling to do something bigger than ourselves, that is something no amount of money paid can do. :)

And this is an interesting point. Because, after all, organized professional sports teams representing this city or that city and competing against each other really are just proxies for tribal warfare, but in a nice, clean, safe shiny way that precludes all the gore and expense of innocent life and personal property. Well, at least most of it. Back in the good olde days, warriors were warriors, pure and simple. They were the visible heroes and saviors of their tribes.

Now, we have many sports celebrities who are just entertainers (although yes, there are some extraordinary athletes who are a joy to watch in action, but rarely without vulgar hubris).

But as least this fake pretty warfare is also lucrative, just like real war.

In all of this discussion, for or against paid athletes, I am reminded why I like College Sports more than the pros. With that, I have to remind myself not to get to upset with the outcome of an event decided by 18-22 year olds....ahh sports, love it or hate it, it's all a part of world culture.

    What about those $*^&!@ REFS!?

But college sports are big business, with compromises to academic performance and standards readily sought wherever it will pay off for team performance in the [insert region] 10. I think that is tragic, but I will agree that college players are more hungry because they haven't yet ascended to the big coffers in the sky.

I have no problem with players' salaries. What I object to is that taxpayers pay for the ballparks. Let the teams or leagues pay for the stadiums with all the revenue they get. Otherwise we taxpayers, whether sports fans or not, are in effect subsidizing the salaries.
