Thanks for the update. I won't even get to Hawaii until July, so the wait isn't as bad for me as it is for you guys.

Yep.. the crappiest part is the waiting game.. But then again, I need some time to save up for the Pamalu or whatever I'm gonna coat it with..

Anyone ever thought about dipping (galvanize) then spray?? Just asking..

Hot dip galvanizing will make the metal more brittle. We use a zinc primer from sherman williams that works pretty good on military vehicles, but putting that on sliders or bumpers that you intend to use is way overkill and pointless IMHO.

If you do, wear a respirator. That stuff is really bad.

neighbor was telling me about POR15 as a possible undercoating. Any insight on that vs that zinc primer before rattle can or sending it off to pamalu?

Im thinking just going to do rattle can. Pamalu is nice but my skid plates got it and it is peeling off. Looks like they did not prime it before putting the liner on. POR15 might be the route before taking it down to pamalu for coating.

Was reading somewhere that POR15 is light sensitive and may look bad if exposed all the time.. I may rattle can, but do some type of bottom layer.

Yep.. I was just on the BAMF site over the weekend and saw that they are now back to doing full top plates on their 96" sliders... (at the time, they weren't doing them anymore). Kudos to Jlee.. Sent him a PM, paying the difference and getting full top plates.. At least my wife won't give me (too much) flack.

Paint won't stick very well to POR-15. Also, POR-15 doesn't work well if there is no rust and has been found to allow rust to form underneath it when painted on clean metal. It's advantage with rusty metal is that it soaks in and then seals the rust preventing it from corroding even more. I have it on parts of my frame, but most of the metal I welded to it did have a thin layer of rust from sitting outside. It's hard to take off without a grinder.
