Did you ever get your transmission sorted out?

Sure did. The issue was the torque converter was warped, causing the flexplate to prematurely stress and fail. The shop replaced the flexplate and as I was driving it out of the shop, it broke again. Only then did the shop measure the runout on the torque converter with a micrometer. This truck ate through two flexplates in less than a week.

My theory is the truck that this transmission came from was in a bad front end collision. In an accident, the engine is designed to break off the engine mounts to prevent the engine from crashing through the passenger cabin. The only place left for the engine to go is the flexplate and torque converter.

Is it fixed and driving again? IIRC you thought about just driving it 2WD for the time being?

That was back in January. I had it fixed in about a week - it's been 4WD for about three months now.

Still haven't had anywhere to test it though LOL

Had a photoshoot with some friends down by some marshland on the San Francisco Bay. Pictures turned out really good! First pictures I have with it as officially a 4WD truck.

In order from back to front: 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 v6 4x4, 2017 Tesla Model S P100D, 2014 BMW 335i, and up in front is my 1998 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner 4x4. (Fun Fact: The Tesla and the Tacoma were made in the same factory in Fremont 20 years apart)

That's the Eastern span of the Dunbarton Bridge in the background for anyone curious.

Have to transition slowly. Don’t want PreRunner withdrawals.

Towed home my new Toolbox the other day. 4 Cylinders are plenty capable of towing loads.

Won’t be the first time towing with the truck. Back in January I towed my 2006 Honda Civic about 120 miles from Sacramento. I only towed the toolbox about 10 miles on the same street.

Oh they’re great. When I towed my Civic I was about 100-200 pounds over the total towing capacity. Didn’t feel like I was towing a thing.

    Tundra brakes helped a ton.

    Sweet first gen Tyler.
reminds me of my very first truck- but mine was a Nissan hardbody.
I lifted that bitch a few inches and was also riding BFGs.
Ass sits so much prettier on these trucks.

Im sure you've already tested your 4 wheel drive, but did you hit something local or make it out to a trail or fire road?

Thanks! I do have a really nice lift for it: 2.5" ICON Coilovers, SPC Upper Control Arms. Rear ICON shocks, AllPro Leafsprings, and some greaseable shackles. I just haven't had time to have the fronts rebuilt yet so it's all sitting on a shelf in my garage. It's currently on the stock suspension.

You know I have not had the chance to test the 4WD yet, only on my paved sidewalk to test the 4LO. I live in the suburbs so there isn't much pubic land around me to test it on. I'm going to hit up the Hollister Hills SVRA one of these days.
