Thing about that is ANYONE can stop the Lien during that time. If the owner wants it back he can get it back from what I understand. To do the Lien my basis would be that the truck was stored and towed on my property and there are unpaid towing fees and storage fees.

This is what tow yards usually do.

I guess there is some risk there. But if no one (previous owners) really knows what you're doing (trying to get a title) my guess is that no one is going to try to snake it from you.

Now watch, you'll go for the lien and the PO will show up and I'll be to blame:bananadead:

They still have to pay your fees. Remember, storage is $90.00 a day. At least it is at my yard. Chp is over $100.00 a day. And a local 5 mile tow is $195.00 + $12.00 per mile. You tracked your miles right? After 3 days in storage you start the Lien process and that gets added to total fees. After 30 days you get lien sale paperwork and you go to DMV and pay every late fee and outstanding ticket and interest on it.

Yep. It was a 136 mile tow and I've had the truck stored in my driveway for a little over two months.

Dang this is an annoying situation! Hopefully no one tries to snake it out from under yah! That’s a great way to go, getting an oldie and fixing it up Kinda wish I’d gone that route since I bought this thing for market price just to find out that it might be needing a major reworking. I’m just telling myself I bought a template of my dream truck. Not I just have to go over everything with the new parts and then it will be good. At least the engine and tranny are solid.

That pretty impressive to strip the cab out like that! This is going to be a sweet build! Subbed

It's kind of on hold now until I can get the title. No point in doing any work if the CHP just takes it away.

I have tons of parts for it though. It's ready to go. Runs like a dream!

I had to make a short film for a class, and my 5-lug was just sitting in my driveway looking sad so I had to do something with it. Here is the most dramatic and cinematic oil change you will ever watch in your life.

Dude you've got some good videography skills, I'd love to hit that paint with my DA polisher and see what we can't do to bring it back to life!

    Thanks!

Trust me that paint isn’t coming back. It’s full of scratches and nicks and rust and collision damage on the rear of the cab. I can flake off the bad bondo job.

So, I have some good news and some bad news.

The Good News: The truck is getting legally registered, and I will be getting the license plates and the registration in the mail within two weeks!

The Bad News: It's going to be registered in the great State of Vermont, which is 3,074.7 miles away from California.

You're probably asking yourself: Why Vermont? The answer to that question is very simple. They don't give a flying crap about who registers vehicles in their state. There is a little known loophole in which title-less vehicles are registered in Vermont, and a title is gained by taking that Vermont documentation and applying for an out-of-state transfer in your home state. Out of the 50 U.S. states, less than 5 of them do not require prior documentation of ownership in order to get a registration and tags. Vermont is the only state out of those which allow non-residents to register their vehicles. You only need a Bill of Sale from the seller, which I made sure of obtaining when I bought the truck. It doesn't matter if the person on the Bill of Sale is not connected to the truck in any way (in my case) - they just care about you 'legally' owning the truck as proven by the BOS.

Here's how the process works. You fill out Vermont DMV form VD-119, which is their "Registration Tax & Title Application" with information like who you bought the truck from, your information, tax & fee info, etc. You then have to calculate how much use tax and fees you owe the State of Vermont. Their procedure is you must pay 6% of the Low NADA value of the truck, which according to NADA is $5,025. 6% of $5,025 is $301.50. You then add their registration fee (76$) and a miscellaneous 'Warranty' fee ($6) and arrive at a grand total of $383.50. You write them a check for that amount, include a copy of the Bill of Sale, and the application, put them in an envelope and send it to the Montpelier DMV.

In two weeks, the Vermont DMV will issue me two Vermont license plates and a registration paper BUT no title. Here's the catch. Vermont does not issue titles to vehicles older than (15) years old, only a certificate of registration - which in that state acts as both the title and the registration. At this point I can drive the truck indefinitely with the Vermont license plates, as long as I pay the renewal fees and insure the truck. If you want to transfer it to California (or your respective state) AND obtain a title through that state, here is what you have to do. You take the Vermont issued registration paper, and license plates and bring it to your local DMV. You inform the friendly clerk behind the counter you'd like to transfer your vehicle into the state, and would like to apply for new tags, registration, and most importantly - a title. If all goes right, they will go through with the transfer after you pay any registration fees and they will print you out a shiny, brand new title.

Here is a video explaining the process:

This has been a tried-and-true method for many years in order to get titles for cars, boats, trucks, and motorcycles. It's purely a cash-grab for the State of Vermont. If all goes well, I will have a legal, fully registered and titled California truck in less than a month.

I'll post an update once the Vermont plates get in the mail.

I should add it only works for vehicles older than 15 years old. What vehicles are they?

Do it! I've heard nothing but success from this method. It's by far the easiest and cheapest method.

I was talking to some friends before I found out about this process and they were talking about swapping VIN's, forging signatures, illegal stuff like that I did not want to get involved in. This is all 100% legal and legitimate.

Tried for a couple months. Craigslist and facebook and word of mouth and anything free to advertise with.
A couple guys offered c10 trades, one backed out and the other two were rust buckets. One guy said he wouldn't buy it because it no longer had cruise control or a windshield wiper reservoir.

I did have one guy offer to trade a flatbed dodge 3500 cummins...sorta tempting but not lookin for a full size. For now its a project again. Just bought some TRD 17's for it. Working on getting those refinished as of now. Im thinking a metallic dark grey or something.
