I have a question say your looking up something for your taco what does it mean when it ask Base, pre-runner or S-runner. Or how do you figure what yours is?

That's your trim. Some examples include PreRunner, SR5, LX, Limited, etc. They relate to options on the truck. PreRunners trim is normally 2WD trucks with the l4 or v6, Limited trim includes power door options, nicer steering wheel, and upgraded power bucket seats.

You mean TRD? Usually your trim is indicated by a badge on the tailgate on the right, especially on a 2004. The earlier 1st gens just had a giant TOYOTA printed on the center.

    Like so:

So it's confirmed that you have an SR5. You should always put in SR5 when it asks for trim. The different trims have different parts that may not be inter-compatible with other trims.

I use base or DLX. usually there is no SR5 or TRD options when looking up parts

you can also use PreRunner depending on the parts, since most of the suspension is shared

Really mostly everything is the same unless you have a 5 lug. If you have the option of putting in SR5, go for it. If not, base is fine.

do a VIN lookup. My 98 SR5 shows up as a DX. They are all a Base model. The title will say what trim package it has.

SR5 means "Sport Rally 5 Speed" as I understand it. Mine is a prerunner with the SR5 package. The SR5 emblem is on the rear doors and the prerunner badge is on the tailgate. I believe the Limited badges would go on the doors as well. Someone should really make a chart or something, but for now a VIN lookup is the best way to figure this stuff out.

I may be wrong, but I believe SR5 originally meant "Short Ratio 5-Speed" and was used on various Toyotas back in the 70s/80s to indicate the 5-speed manual tranny, which was a pretty new thing back then. Most manuals were still 4-speeds in those days.

"The SR5 package, which stands for Sport Rally 5-Speed, is an extra-value package offered with the Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. This package provides a number of additional features and may be selected on its own or with the Double Cab Convenience Extra Value Package."

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Actually means Sport Rally 5 and was originally designed as the model with all the features. Of course now it's pretty low on the list. Go look up the first Toyota Pickups to be sold in the US, you can still find magazine brochures and old TV ads that say the full name and detail what it means. When the SR5 term was new they didn't even have a 5 speed manual offered in the pickup.

Yea, I stand corrected... curiosity got the better of me and I googled it, too. Thanks for the clarification.

I know what OP is asking. Most websites on ask if Base or Pre-Runner. Simply to distinguish between 4wd and 2wd.

If OP is 4x4, then Base. If OP is 2wd, then Pre-Runner.

I can't stand sites that do this! Some site have three options: DLX, Base and Prerunner. I am always confused by this. What is the difference between DLX and Base anyway? Is DLX the limited package or something, and even if it is, I wonder what difference it would make? I wish more sites would just go by VIN, even though it is a pain to type it in each time.
