If you get a 2nd Gen Battery Tray then a 27F fits.

Alright, just got back from running some errands in the truck. Small trickle charger was on approximately 24hours.
    Truck started fine.
Forgot to take voltage before starting.

But with truck running high idle(coldstart) i got 14.13 volts dc
    (Alternator)

After running errands and truck being off a couple times and restarted. I got home turned truck off made sure lights etc were all off and my voltage was 12.25vdc.

Will check vdc again in am and if there is a significant drop i will remove the battery and take to autozone/autovalue for testing.

Anyone know if you can buy Odyssey batteries at any major auto stores or just online?

Northstar 31M. Big one. I love mine. But pricey. Over 300.00

I trust Toyota more than you, no offense. Disconnect all of your electrical mods and then check it. If still having problrms then blame the battery.

Alright, truck started this morning did some errands and went back home. About 6hrs later it would not start again. I have a trip early tomorrow to kicking horse but will be back in the evening.
I should be able to use my clamp on ampmeter and put around the power wire to the spod and then the trs hid kit and see if there is amp draw. Otherwise... bad battery.

If i wanted to pick up a battery anyways. Just for verification the 3rd gen replacement will be a 27f and the biggest i can fit without modding would be a 31M. Thx.

You can fit a 27F if you have a Battery Tray from a 2nd Gen with towing package, otherwise it will hang over the tray.

I installed a 27F X2power (Northstar from BatteriesPlus with a 5 year replacement warranty, can’t beat it) with the 2nd gen tray you can get from any Toyota dealer for a couple bucks.

A group 31 doesn’t have much more capacity or power than the 27F size, and it’s harder to mount. It’s larger, heavier, and you need to buy a bigger non-OEM tray or cage for it.

Like you, my factory battery died in less than a year. I thought the 24F was too small, so instead of a warranty replacement, I upgraded.

Those lithium are mainly for all your guys running crazy stereos. XS power makes some of the best batteries though, and their agm’s are much more affordable (still more expensive than a lead acid though).

I now have a 3rd Gen but it replaced a 1997 that I bought new. In 20 years I only had to replace the battery one time. Never had a headlight go out either. I guess things have changed.

Flooded lead batteries are all about the same simple design. AGM batteries require a different charging pattern for optimal life. Tacomas charging system is designed for flooded cell batteries not for AGM. Yes, AGM batteries will work a little longer but not last to their full potential. Some BMWs do have AGM charging systems. Manufactures should build switchable voltage regulators for the type of battery installed.

I’m a cheapskate and buy batteries that I get the most years per dollar. I buy batteries that I can fill with water and maintain. I’ll replace a $150 battery every 4 years vs a $300 battery every 5. Vehicles are a terrible environment for a lead acid battery. I have a deep cycle flooded trolling motor battery that’s 15 years old and still runs great. I keep it in a cool basement with a float charger on it. Vehicles engine bays are hot and have a constant parasitic draw which kills batteries. Also, if you ever let the battery get low enough to not start the truck you just knocked significant life out of it. They must stay charged. My suggestion is buy batteries that are not maintenance free, check the water levels monthly, NEVER let the battery drain. You’ll get the best value out of your battery.

Just want to add to this thread. My Taco didn't crank over, hesitated a few times. Cleaned terminals and cranked on, but not a strong start. Made it to destination and back home. One more errand later in the day, but got stranded at grocery store. Luckily just a jump and made it home. I only have 28,000 miles & 18 months since I bought it new January 2017. I'll find out for sure tomorrow.

Does anyone have a part number for the 2nd Gen Battery tray that would fit a 27F in a 3rd Gen?
