It is common sense to test the charging system just to be certain when you have an issue like this. The voltage of the battery really means very little without testing it under load. Yes, a faulty alternator can lead to battery failure but in most cases this is easy to tell considering a vehicle will not go far on battery power alone and if the alternator is putting out less than the regulated voltage there will be tell tale signs when you drive the vehicle.

Yes, one dead cell, the dealer put in a new one free and that got me going again. One mistake, my truck's a 2011. I bought it in mid August last year.

Dexterdog........................ you're right, it is common sense to test the system. That's why as soon as my wife got home from work @ 1:00PM I had her give me a jump and drove my truck to a friend's Garage (Blair's British Cars) to be SURE of what it was before wasting time at the dealer!!!!! When I got to the dealer I told them what the problem was and who checked it and that got me on the quick ramp to being out of there instead of waiting, and waiting, and waiting............................

I only posted the original question to get any possible recall feedback and to kill time until my wife got home.

No start. Jump start and it starts fine means your battery is dead. What caused this (bad alternator, broken battery, terminal corrosion) is another story. Glad you got it fixed.

With starting problems it is standard proceedure to test the battery, connections, alternator output, and parasitic draw. Any one of these can cause your problem.
A bad battery can kill an alternator, and vice versa. Also, the green eye only gives the health of one cell of the battery.

As always is the case on forums (and also why I've guit more than a few}, people don't READ what's there......................... I clearly said "a friend's Garage (Blair's British Cars)".

    Notice the word "FRIEND'S"!!!!!!!
Not only is this guy a truly world class mechanic and doesn't mind that title, but he's also a FRIEND, for the third time now!!!! It took him less than 20 seconds to find the EXACT problem and it cost me nothing. This is a freaking charging system we're talking about here, not and engine or tranny rebuild. Even then though, I'd STILL have taken my vehicle to him first to get his tried, true, and trusted opinion on what the most possible problem and fix would be before ever taking it to someone (dealer, etc.) else to do the work!!!!!!

A world class mechanic is a world class mechanic. This guy has had his business now for 35+ years and DEALERS from all over this part of the country (Dallas, Memphis, etc.) send him vehicles on trailers because nobody in their area can or will find, let alone FIX the problem!!!!! It matters not a whit what one's specialty autos are when it comes down to trailing down a charging system problem!!!!!

Calm down chief. It was a joke. Perhaps you have heard of the notorious issues British cars have had throughout history? I read the entire post (and thread for that matter). I am sure that your friend is a fine mechanic and I am glad that you found the solution to your issue.

I have had a similar problem the last few days. My cranking speed got slower but the engine still caught and ran. The battery seems good (lights/fan/radio all work strong) and tonight it was colder and it hardly turned at first but it sped up as I cranked but not enough to make it run. Can't see it being battery as when they go bad the crank speed slows down not speeds up. Starter dieing or bad contacts somewhere? Its an 06 tacoma V6 extended cab TRD with 220K. Thoughts/advice?

    Thanks.

If the lights did not dim while the engine was being cranked, then I would look for a voltage loss (high resistance) between the battery and the starter motor, which includes cables, cable connections, solenoid contacts, or motor brushes. Please remember that heat kills batteries and cold affects their cranking performance and amp hour capacity.
