My 02 taco had that same issue. It was not the battery or the starter. It was that little ground wire attached from the negative terminal to the frame that was broke. After reading these threads, I also picked up a Duralast battery cable under 10 bucks from autozone. Being a below average mechanic, I put it on and I had the same issue??????It wasn't starting?????....I was like "what the helllls????..******Remember to Tighten it as best as you can with out breaking it********.That was the problem. I needed to tighten it to the frame as best as I could and she Started!!!!!Thanks everybody here for your help.

I'm hoping this will revive this thread. My ground going to the fender also broke. I don't know how long ago it broke. I've got it put back together now.

Would this ground not being attached be causing a burning electrical smell on the driver's side of the engine bay? Thank you in advance!

    It's obviously grounded...it's how DC works ;)

Lack of ground shouldn't but a high resistance ground may.

I had a buddy that lost his common to the house.
the only way for things to work was through a punny ground wire in the service panel....
    ....it wasnt enough...

Before they figured it out, it fried the washer, dryer, oven, micro wave, and his brandnew LG 50"...
took a couple of months before they figured it out.

Basically everything with a transformer or a motor....

you just cant make this sh#$ up....

The electricity tries to find a way, anyway it can.

Yeah its too bad I don't take drugs, I would of forgot all this stuff by now...

or turned into something hateful.....you would make a terrible pastor...
I've never ever said that to anybody.

So the moral of the story is....you definitely need good grounds.
especially DC stuff that's connected to your ecm.
the more the better......especially if you accidently short something hot into it.

There should be a ground off the back of the P/S head to the firewall if you have the 3.4 and the back of the head if she is a 4 cyl.

The battery to fender ground grounds everything in the cab. If the ground from the battery to the block is questionable then the electrical current will take the next path of least resistance, sometimes this is the throttle cable, sometimes this is the TV cable to the automatic transmission… not good especially when it is the starter using lots of amps.

For future reference the main battery ground is bolted to the engine near the transmission on the drivers side. If your underneath the drivers area looking towards the front of the truck you should see it. 2002 Tacoma 20240724_064256.jpg
