that works on trucks with the alt-s fuse. The 3rd gen doesn’t have one. It’s controlled by the ecu.

No one has been able to modify it until just recently it’s been added to vF

don’t take this wrong, did you watch the video? it says it tricks the ecu via the diode to increase the voltage? I have seen the other threads about how the alt-s fuse works on second gens... this seemed different from my other readings. not being a smart a$$ here... I would like to find an easy mod in order to use an AGM... just asking.

Yeah the diode is for 2nd gen, from what I've read... the OVtune trick for the 3rd gens makes sense to me, now... Hmmm... well, I've got solar topping off the aux batt... Ignorance is bliss....

That’s the same as any of the others with alt-s. You replace that fuse to trick it into boosting the voltage

on the third gen that fuse doesn’t exist.

I’ll will be going with an AGM Optima Red top soon enough. Mostly for the fact AGMs don’t put off corrosive gasses into the engine bay causing rust and more. They also crank the truck better on those -35c mornings and are capable of deep cycles. Where I live it’s a frozen wasteland half the year so all batteries live a hard life. Optima is probably not the best AGM, but they are ubiquitous where I live and most places sell them with a good price and warranty. If you need to stick with lead go for Interstate. There May be only a few companies that actually manufacture batteries, but they all have many different grades of battery available and some brands like interstate spec better batteries to slap their sticker on.

Why do you say? Both my batteries in my 80 are lead acid and have been fine over countless wheeling trips.

Optima gets a bad rap on this site, and maybe it's well deserved, I don't know.

What I do know, is I've been using Optima batteries for the past 20+ years, up to and until this very day, and I've yet to have one fail that hadn't more than earned it's keep. I've also heard bad things about Optima's handling of warranty issues, but again, I've never had one fail anywhere even close to being within it's warranty period.

I've even used them on scissor lifts in offsite construction involving deep discharges over and over and over again, and they've always sucked it up well past a lifespan I would have been satisfied with.

They've earned my trust and I'm going to buy them until I get burned.

Is this a 3rd gen specific thing? I have a X2Power (NorthStar) in my 2010 and have never had an issue with charge and the reserve power is phenomenal I have a *LOT* of accessories on my truck.

You must be getting lucky or getting really good lead batteries. I've killed the battery my 80 came with and the replacement Costco one in a couple years. Both were leaking fluid at the top. To be fair they do get pretty tipsy in the Sierras. I switched to an Autozone AGM and never had problems after. Also having it start up after sitting not running for a long time is nice.

    Well yes, but actually no...

AGMs like Northstar etc. need higher voltage (I believe over 14.1V) to charge them properly. In 2nd gens there is a way to cheat the alternator to boost the voltage (HBK electronics makes a doohikey). As far as know there isn't a way to cheat 3rd gens into that.

Edit. Check out this thread The NorthStar AGM Battery + Voltage Booster Upgrade

And maybe this one as well, if you have time to do so AGM BATTERY CHARGING - ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE BOOSTER
