If it wasn't such a major job I would do it myself. I'm a diesel tech. I don't have anywhere to do it and can't have my only transportation down to do the job

Look here in the TSB for the common places.
Also check the cam sensor bolts. They can leak out at the bolts.

Not trying to deter you from buying the truck.
I just don't want to see you be in for a shock when you go to get the leak fixed.
Don't let the blow smoke up your ass. It's going to be expensive. Just make sure you get enough knocked off to fix it.
I'd want $2,500-$3,000 knocked off the price. Or have them commit to fixing the leak for you.

I appreciate you telling me this information. I'm not that familiar with the 3.5

It's not a bad engine. It's actually pretty decent.
But like anything, they have issues too.
They all do, but the 3.5 just seems to be a little more labor intensive.

Yea I mean even at just $100/hr labor the $1900 would only cover the labor with no parts.

Just know that a crew cab Tacoma does not have much legroom in the back at all especially if you have a tall person sitting in the front.

    You aren't telling me anything.

I would have liked to have a 4 door.
But I didn't need one, and the AC was cheaper.
If I buy a 4 Door truck, it wont be a Tacoma. Not unless I come across a screaming deal.
I'm set on a full size for my next truck. But with any luck, that will be a few more years. Hopefully like 5+ more years.

To do the timing cover reseal we remove front diff and steering rack now, its still a bear of a job.

Make sure to get on the highway, the 16 shifts odd for some and going up hill on at 60-65 typically causes it to downshift like crazy, especially with heavier tires like those.

I wish it had stock rims. They were going to send the truck off to auction because of the oil leak, needing tires, and a cv axle boot and other knick picky things. I'm starting to think I may want to stay away from the 3.5. The more research I do on the oil makes me think I will have to reseal it every few years

Once is usually enough, but I don't really enjoy working on the 3.5. It's an issue with the sealant application and deviation from head-block-timing cover.

We are all pleased its finally phasing out for a 4 cylinder.

I hate to say it but I may pass on it and find me something else. I'm afraid this truck was rode hard and neglected. Car fax showed oul changes every 10,000 miles which im not a fan of even with full synthetic. Especially with the big tires on it and the ditty stained seats.

Thanks yall for all the help. I wish I could find a good 2nd gen tacoma. I really want another tacoma. My father in law has bought frontiers for a long time and loves them. Has never had a issue with them. I also think stuff isn't built like it used to be.
